Margaret, Ann and Old crone Thanks for pointing that out......I am not against sharing, infact I do it all the time but the problem is when people take my very well reasearched info (without asking) and copy it in to their tree's and don't take the time to get it right. I just have to say...I have copied from other people's trees before but I always ask first and I only copy the branch that is of interest to me and most importantly I double check all the info I copy so that I know it is right! I just wish others followed these simple rules, I think it's just common curtesy. Deb

Is it over yet????? the footy that is. I have problems with the GR tree, I am unable to enter anything beyond my grandmother. The 'tab' is stuck down on add and will not let me do ought about it.....So, my tree is a hard copy, I have a working, scruffy one, and a best tidy one. It is so easy to sat with it in front of me whilst using the computer. I have been very fortunate in meeting up with some rellies at the top of some of my branches, and they have given me info and vice versa. I think long and hard before ordering certs, its the miser in me I think. I have only ordered the wrong info once, but I cried for that £7 lol lol lol Kathlyn

It's a hard life isn't it!!!!! Because of all this I'm now copying all mine onto Word, then I'll delete the damned tree. It's taking forever!!! Jean

I agree with Margaret - its people copying information that does NOT belong to their relatives, either deliberately (because they are name collectors) or because their own research has been so sloppy they just ASSUME mine is theirs, that is the problem. I am very willing to share everything I have done over 40 years, but only with my genuine, proven relatives. There is simply no point otherwise. OC

Margaret Report 25 Jun 2006 14:15

Leann Surely the purpose of this thread is the moan about people copying wrongly rather than 'just copying'. I have had access to trees where the info is totally wrong and sloppy to say the least. My attitude is, if you cant do it properly, then dont do it at all. Even when errors are pointed out, with proof, they still persist in their version. Margaret

Hi , I'm new to this even though I have been at it (very Slowly mind you) since 2000. You are all moaning about sharing your trees and people 'stealing' (so to speak ) your information but isn't the purpose of doing a family tree, to step backwards in history down your family line in order to find where new paths into the future lead. My immediate family are the only living links I have to my ancestors. Because my grandfather came to Australia very young and alone and my contact with him was limited(other sides of the country) all I definately know is that he had aleast 1 brother and 1 sister. He told me where he was born. From there I have search all free records becuase I don't really know who I'm looking for.I have peiced bits together by census birth & marriage records. Through building what I have found on my tree and making it availiable to ANYONE , I am hoping that I will get Information from other people that will give me a direction to look to ensure that I order the correct certificates etc. By doing this I have since found a lady who we share a great great great grandmother with.Maybe with our combined information more people will also find a common link and as such we will each build on our trees. Please remember that some people have no time to look but plenty of money to buy information and others have no money to spend but will spend hours scourering every availiable resourse . If we all share then we will find that we really are all one big family!! Anyway ,whatever your method , good luck with your trees.

Yes, it makes me angry every time I get my hot matches come through! Luckily my tree is split into 2 I have my dads side and my mon has her side - she is the only one with access to my tree now and thats the way it will stay. Cant believe 30 mins extra time now. Sara

Elizabeth Report 24 Jun 2006 21:44

Just wondering................ I've had the same thing happen with Hot Matches. Had someone with 40 matches, all sides, hubbys, mine etc. Have never communicated with anyone with that GR name and she will not answer my emails. I can't see her tree but from the Hot Matches, she has copied mine as it has the same mistakes. A couple were deliberate to add to the Trying To Find board. When I asked another family member she had the same problem. Don't suppose it's the same person, just copying trees to sell at the markets on Sunday???

But how firmly in the family do they have to be? The person that copied all mine was related by my great x 5 grandmother's sister. There is no written confimation she was actually her sister! Yet she copied it nether the less and passed it on to others... She even has her own web page and guess what? Its there too! My name is not mentioned in her source of Data and her website boasts all the research she has done! I think not! Then some time ago somone sent me their tree (not that I asked for it) and all my hard work was there! When I questioned them about parts of it, turns they had copied it from someone else. Guess Who? How bitter do I sound! Never mind you live and learn. Sara

I think I must have been lucky. The hot matches I have had on mine and my husbands trees have all been genuine. but I have never opened my tree unless they have produced information which puts them firmly in the family. Ann glos

I dont mind sharing - but so far that hasnt happened, its been all give (me) and all take (them). Not once has anyone said 'Thanks for the stuff, I see you havent found Joe Bloggs marriage, tell me where youve looked and I'll have a go' So my tree remains firmly shut and I dole out information bit by bit if I think there is a genuine connection. Loren, You are very lucky, it is nice when you can work together. But there are alot of name collectors out there who just copy your tree and pass it on to others who in turn pass it on to others and eventually you get a contact off some-one giving you your tree back... lol Sara

Most of the info they have is from my tree.....When I asked them for info they had on certs I was told they haven't got any!! I am always willing to share certs I have with fellow reasearchers and I never rely on anyone elses hard earned cash to further my tree but some others obviously do..But I do have to say I have made some great contacts on here who do take care with the info they put in their tree and share!!!
