Sorry, I got side tracked there, someone pmd me. Have we looked for Simon as a Grant in 1881 and 1891? Will leave that with you. By that age if he is the right man he should be in the occupation that you find him in when he married or the 1901? Have you looked for Simon senior in the 1851? (Though I have this sneaking feeling we may find he is Irish) And Margaret Garland? Good luck - if it does turn out correct, just make the cheque out to cash and we'll all share it! :}

Yes Elaine I will do that, Would never have thought that so much info could be given so quickly. So glad I contacted tips board.

To prove Heather´s possibility you could get the birth certificate of one of the older Grant children, which should show mother as Margaret Grant, late Boland, formerly Garland.

A big thanks to everyone. You may have solved the mystery. It's certainly a line worth following Give yourselves a pat on the back

Cant see any Darlings there, just Margaret Garland. I think we have a registrar mishearing the name because of the accent - if she spoke with an Irish accent she probably wouldnt pronounce the hard 'd' at the end of Garland.. AND, the down side is shes Irish! So if Margaret Garland married Simon Boland in 1864 and had Mary Ann in 1865 and then Simon in 1866 and same year Simon senior died, it looks like 2 years later she married Mr Grant and the kids Simon and Mary A have been recorded on the 1871 under his name. POSSIBLY!!! All supposition. Have we checked census for the other surname of the groom in that marriage - Gallagher wasnt it? The only Mary A Boland I can find on freebmd was born March quarter 1864 in Liverpool. This probably isnt her. You could look through the full bmd index on ancestry for her.

And do you have that certificate giving his dad and wifes dad? That marriage date fits with the Mary on the Grants census details. Marriages Jun 1864 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Boland Simon Tynemouth 10b 301 Donkin Mary Ann Tynemouth 10b 301 Garland Margaret Tynemouth 10b 301 Hendry George Martin Tynemouth 10b 301

Simon looks good but shame we dont have any kids we could find on the earlier census to see if Mary matches for the Bolands How does the status and area fit? Little bit concerned about that servant in there. What sort of work did Solomon the dad do?.

Elaine

Elaine Report 3 Jul 2006 22:46

This could match the 1868 marriage which Heather has found 1871 John Grant abt 1833 Ireland Head Fellside Durham Margaret Grant abt 1839 Ireland Wife Fellside Durham Margaret Grant abt 1869 Whickham, Durham, England Daughter Fellside Durham Mary A Grant abt 1865 Shields Daughter Fellside Durham Simon Grant abt 1867 Whickham, Durham, England Son Fellside Durham Thomas Grant abt 1870 Whickham, Durham, England Son Fellside Durham Mary Malon abt 1853 Berry Edge, Durham, England Servant Fellside Durham

Clare, believe me 2 years is full mourning for back then! You see them marrying same year sometimes - it was a matter of necessity - money coming in and food in the kids stomachs. So you have the marriage of Margaret to Solomon? Could you tell us all you have please? Save us duplicating info already in hand.

Clare

Clare Report 3 Jul 2006 22:44

I have given two surnames for Margaret because on the birth certificate it is recorded as Darling, when I looked for the marriage of Simon snr the name was Garland. Yes Heather looking for a death between those 2 dates.

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 3 Jul 2006 22:41

Heather

Heather Report 3 Jul 2006 22:40

Clare, so did you know his mother remarried? Which one of those two is her new husband? So assuming dad was there at conception (?) then we are looking for a death between March/April 1866-December 1866.

Clare

Clare Report 3 Jul 2006 22:39

That's Simon's birth. Chester le Street was the registration district, I'm wondering if she married so soon after her husband's death.
