Well - that goes to show that you should ALWAYS check the image and not rely on the transcription. Have just had a look at the 1891 image for you and she has been put down by the enumerator as Annie Elizabeth THOMPSON Ancestry have transcribed her as Annie Elizabeth GOUGH !!!! Problem solved !!!

Guess we will never know, thank you

Elaine

Elaine Report 15 Jul 2006 10:07

Yes - or else they told a little fibbie on the 1891 - and were honest on the 1901 !!

Sylvia

Sylvia Report 15 Jul 2006 10:04

So mum or dad used her stepfather surname in 1891 as she was only 6 and Annie herself reverted back to her own fathers name when she was old enough to make up her own mind.

Nell - no she was a Thompson at birth - I believe the child of Sarah Ann Shipley and John Thompson. John Thompson then dies and Sarah Ann marries John Gough in 1888 - Annie has taken the Gough name on the 1891 census. For some reason on the 1901 census she has been recorded correctly as Thompson, step daughter.

Not sure if I read your thread correctly, Sylvie, but Elaine says in one of her postings that Annie Eliz. Hampson looks like Thompson on the image, so it appears that she was Gough at birth (presumably born before the marriage) and assumed her step-father's surname on the census, which was fairly common. nell

Elaine

Elaine Report 15 Jul 2006 09:55

Personally - yes I do - particularly as we have found a possible Shipley/Thompson and Thompson/Gough marriage.

Sylvia

Sylvia Report 15 Jul 2006 09:15

Do you think Annie Elizabeth Gough in 1891 and Annie E Hampson in1901 could be the same person

Sylvia

Sylvia Report 15 Jul 2006 08:56

Thank you both so much, this is a great help

This is a birth for the Annie in the 1901 Births Dec 1884 Thompson Annie Elizabeth Belper 7b 642 Just wonder if Sarah Shipley married John Thompson, who then died - and she remarried John Gough ? possible deaths for a John Thompson if the above is right !! Deaths Sep 1884 Thompson John 64 Belper 7b 387 Deaths Sep 1885 Thompson John 41 Belper 7b 303 Deaths Mar 1886 Thompson John 31 Belper 7b 405

She does seem to be born before the other children so maybe Sarah was married before

Thank you, i seems this side of my family moved around a bit, just like my mothers side

I find the 1901 census a little strange with the Hampson daughter listed as stepdaughter. Have looked at the image and I think it says Thompson. Have looked for a marriage for Sarah Ann to John Gough and cant see on at the moment on FREE BMD - but I have found this one which caught my eye because of the Thompson name ?? Marriages Jun 1884 Booth Samuel Belper 7b 959 SHIPLEY Sarah Ann Belper 7b 959 STONE Martha Belper 7b 959 Thompson John Belper 7b 959
