Uncle John Report 17 Jul 2006 22:44

I have found real value in subscribing to Ancestry. I'd been doing my tree for years using free resources (though I had to do a fair bit of pay per view for my Scottish rellies). Then I blew my birthday money on an annual Ancestry sub. and suddenly the world was my lobster. I'm still too tight to fork out for certificates but seeing actual census images is magic. The Scottish records are good value if you use common sense (marriage register images cost a pound). The garden has gone totally to pot.

hiya, you can search for free births marriages deaths, on www*ancestry*co*uk, you will need the complete index, which covers 1837-2004, or there is freebmd, but this is no means complete. to have access to census from 1841-1901 ancestry is the best site i think to use, you can buy a subscription for about 70 quid i think it is for the year, i may be wrong, sure someone will put me right :)) Julie

Your next step would be to buy William Lyon's birth cert to confirm his mum's maiden name (and confirm the above is all correct!!) If you think you will be sticking with this hobby then a sub to Ancestry at a little over £1 a week (if you subscribe annually) is worth it's weight in gold!! Merry

As he was born mid-Dec 1903, there's a good chance his birth was registered Q1 1904 (you get 6 weeks to reg a birth) There are these four possibles: Births Dec 1903 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Lyons William Stockport 8a 73 Lyons William Leeds 9b 434 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Births Mar 1904 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LYONS William Chorlton 8c 792 LYONS William Denis Toxteth Park 8b 154 The last one has a middle name and yours hasn't anywhere else.....Leeds is Yorkshire, so possbly less likely.....Stockport is probably second favourite and Chorlton the most likely! If the family I found 1901 is the right one, Catherine as mother could well have been the witness on the marriage cert. nell

Merry I think its the grandparents' fathers whose birth dates are unknown.

Merry

Merry Report 17 Jul 2006 21:36

Oh dear!! I am very confused!!! You have your grandmother on the 1901 census and you believe your grandfather was born in 1903, but you have ''no idea about the year of their births'' Yes you do, surely???!!! When did they die? Merry

Unknown Report 17 Jul 2006 21:20

Well you will have to either a) look for the marriage of their fathers at some point before your grandparents' births - their ages will be on the certs or b) assume their fathers would be aged about 25-35 when they were born Depends on how common their names were. nell
