Afternoon all! I've now received the Marriage Cert for John Brown and Elizabeth Simpson which seems to match what I know to date. A couple of questions though... 1) The marriage was in 'The Cath. & Parish Church' inthe Parish of Manchester. What would a lowly ancestor of mine be doing getting married in a Cathedral? (Or was it more common back then (1850)? 2) Groom and his father's occupations given as Whitesmith which I believed to be to do with working with white metals. Does this tie in with John's later occupation as watchmaker? (I have found a census entry in 1841 for what might be the Brown's in Prescot where both John and Richard are 'watch-m')? 3) I can't at the moment find Elizabeth in 1841 - she was 28 in July 1850, d of John Simpson - occupation - 'Clogger' Mark

Mark 1861 census index shows a John Thomas Brown in Coventry Holy Trinity, BUT born c 1861. The 1863 death could be him. Jay

I've found a death in March 1863 in Coventry - a John Thomas. BROWN John Thomas Coventry 6d 316 What would the death certificate tell me if I forked out for it? Mark

The 2nd marriage seems to sort out for you the John Brown death as being the first one (1859) Mark, especially as he does not seem to appear in 1861. Jay

Do you have them on 1871 Mark, living with William Elliott? I can't seem to find them. Is Elizabeth using the Elliott name? Sue

Mark

Mark Report 19 Jul 2006 10:27

I don't think it could be 1859 - Mary jane was born November 1861. Can anybody find when William Elliott married Elizabeth - I can't find it. If John and Elizabeth married in 1850 and had Richard (poor soul he has been mistranscribed as Crown, Buron and all sorts in his life!) in 1851, I wonder what they were up to until 1860? Mark

Thats interesting Sue - looks like John must have gone (or died) before Mary Jane was born at the end of 1861. Mark
