Good morning Grampa I still think the Powells on 1871 will link up. I believe that Ann who is Enoch Powell's mother on there - married to John Powell, was Ann PEARSON. They married Dec Q 1859 - Stockton 10a 67. Will have a further look later. Dea x

O.K. Thanks all, I look forward to tomorrow's thrilling instalment. After all, the Powell matriarch could be Elias' sister? And thanks again for the help you have given me so far. It is very reassuring to know that Enoch actually existed and wasn't a figment of the enumerator's imagination. Lol

Jim, Will have to go off line soon but PLEASE do not discount the Powells - Judith has also added to this the reference for your family on 1891 - RG12/4066. Again in 1901 there are connections. Must go now till morning but Judith also has some interesting leads - will be in touch again tomorrow. Dea x

Sorry - had to go off-line for a while Xx Judith, You seem to be following along the same lines as me - I just have a feeling about these people - what did you find on 1891 so I can have a look? Dea x

Of course, as Elias was Welsh he and his wife may well have been visiting family there when Enoch was born. Although the 1881 has him as born in West Hartlepool, but then also they have his name as Wetherill, not Thomas.

I have seen and discounted the Powell family. There were several Enoch Thomases born around the right time, It seems to be a matter of identifying which is the right one, because none of them are where I would have expected,.

Janice, I don't know when Hannah died, and I had never heard of Elias until today.

Janice Report 23 Jul 2006 20:59

Do you know when Elias and Hannah died? If Elias was dead by 1881 and Hannah was back on her own with kids from her first marriage she might want them all to be using the same name.

Grandpa, Don't ask me why but I have a feeling about this family on 1871 - names don' add up (forgive me), but I just feel it's worth following - I will see what I can find. I have even searched using only Enoch with no surname. Nothing comes up which links to the family. I wonder why Hannah might revert to her 1st married name if I have the right one in 1881. As to the 1871 William definitely had a sister Elizabeth Alice, and their mother WAS Hannah. And as Enoch was (presumably) born after the marriage of Elias and Hannah, why is he down in the 1881 as Wetherald and not Thomas? Unless Elias was a right bas**rd and she wanted to wipe him out of her life.

Janice, You may well have solved another puzzle. I knew that William's father had died before 1877. So Hannah looks as if she remarried! Thank you. Phoebe Page Pearson was born at 3 John Street, Middlesbrough, daughter of Ann. She had no father recorded on her Birth Certificate In 1877 she was married from Frederick Street, Hartlepool. 1881 Census, 24 Alfred Street, Hartlepool, Durham, England. Name Telica Wetherill Relationship Wife Condition M Gender F Age 22 Birthplace Middlesbro, York, England. PRO Ref RG11/4907 Folio 74 Page 28 FHL film No 1342180. 1891 Census 27 Alice Street, Stranton, West Hartlepool Phoebe Weatherall, 33, born Middlesbrough. Death Ref, Hartlepool HA92-0-213 William's details are Births Sep 1853 WETHRELD William Stockton 10a 45 Christened as William Weatherald. Aged 6 on 1861 census On his marriage cert he is listed as Thomas William, but on his Son, John James' birth cert he is listed as William Thomas. Tom was living in same road as Phoebe Pearson in Middlesborough, Rumour was that he ran away to Hartlepool to join the Militia, however it looks more like an elopement. In 1877 at the time of his marriage both he and his bride were living at Frederick Street, Hartlepool.

What do you think about this for William in 1871? Both men are pudlers which ties in with the iron worker in 1881. Elias Thomas abt 1829 Lorachen Sant, Wales Head Stranton Durham Hannah Thomas abt 1824 Stillington, Yorkshire, England Wife Stranton Durham Alas Elizabeth Wetherald abt 1860 Stockan, Durham, England Stepdaughter Stranton Durham William Wetherald abt 1855 Stockan, Durham, England Stepson Stranton Durham Elias is the sort of name that would go with Enoch I think. Joy, Why shouldn't it be recorded in the late 1860s? His siblings were recorded in 1853 and 1860.

Joy

Joy Report 23 Jul 2006 20:24

Ok, taking into consideration the year that he was born, then his birth might not have been registered. Off to have a search. Back later. Joy

I am trying to find my possible great granduncle Enoch Wetherald. The only evidence I have for his existence is the 1881 Census. I can't find any birth details, death details or marriage.
