Horatia, it could be a swear word over here, as they were tying to ban it quite a few years back. Poms that is!!!! Sylvia

I'm only just working out how to use this part of thr GR site.... Is it a kind of 'chat' room thing? I've hit 'add reply' for this message although i've just posted a reply under a new message with a similar title but unoffensive I hope...

Lucille, if you are brand new, have a look at the getting started info on the home page. I will also bump up tips for newbies for you. The site is very active. I know on all the other sites I found before this you could leave a message and go back 3 weeks later and not have an answer. The people on here are brilliant and you get almost immediate response.

Had to add my penny's worth . Here in the (southern) US you cannot say damn, Hell or bitch without causing eyebrows to be raised, faces to turn apoplectic purple, or tut tut tuts of admonishment. BUT you can use the word p*ss as freely as you like, with no comment. I couldn't believe my ears for years - that was one of the big 'don't you ever dare to say that' words when I was growing up in England. It still brings me up sharp to hear nice, middle class, church going Southern ladies, say that they were really p*ssed off.

Thanx Heather, I'll check out your tips... I'm a bit impatient I guess... I tend to experiment and learn from that...that 's how I found the Tips Board... rather than reading the instructions first...they seem so complicated. It really is a wonderful site, I found a cousin through a wonderful woman who had helped her do her tree. She was able to send me copies of birth & marriage certificates & details of my paternal ancestry going back to the early 1700's. I started with 2names. Unfortunately my cousin died in May but at least we were able to make contact. I've made contact with 3 others descended from my Grandfathers siblings...I dont have a clue how they are named 1st or 2nd etc cousin once or twice etc removed. I'm just very grateful to people like yourself who help. PS> I dont agree with swearing either... it was a quote. I used it for impact and because I thought it a 'clever pun' eg. we are in the business of tracing bloodlines arent we..I'm an Aussie, calling for British help..the ad was aimed at the OS market, it was meant to show our easy going friendliness bred from the British Colonies. The word originated from the term blue blood. Ironic i think. Ta again folks.

Its forgotten Lucille - you should have seen our rude name thread a while back, I think the GR team must have had a coronary reading that.

You might find this site useful - for historical London... http://www.motco.*com/MAP/ (remove *) They have quite a list, and they're not difficult to navigate Christine.
