Merry Report 2 Aug 2006 16:08

Apologies if this sounds a bit big-headed, but I'm just letting everyone know that I'm going on a family history holiday for a week!! Please don't send me any pm's looking for your rellies or asking about anything, because I won't be answering!! We will be sitting in a field in Oxfordshire for seven days and nights (could you stop that rain dance, please?).....have half a dozen villages to visit and such like.......Am hoping to get into my grandparents home and that of my gg-grandparents. Usually I am shy and retiring, but sometimes go into my special actress mode when on a family history jaunt!! If you live anywhere near Witney of Banbury, be warned!!! (and watch your local TV news for reports!) See you all Friday of next week.....will be on here on and off until tonight....leaving first think tomorrow! Merry xx

Well I hope you have a good one! I'm lucky that have been in homes of some of my 'ancestors' on basis that my family haven't moved too much and 3 out of 4 of the Gt.grandparents lived in my area, but would suspect that anyone would only be too pleased to let you in for a quick look around providing you aren't bringing the tent to erect on back lawn!!!! Or turn up on them whilst they are doing their family history on Ancestry/GR in which case their housework wont have been done and they will be too ashamed to let you in! look forward to hearing how you get on next week. all the best Gill :))

Merry, I couldn't remember when you said you were going, so glad I saw this and could wish you a happy holiday and happy rellie hunting. I too am off tommorow for two weeks and have spent nearly all day packing. so feel justified in popping on here for an hour or so!! see you on the boards when I get back. Kind Regards Fuzzy x

Have a wonderful and rewarding week, Merry - THAT is what I call a holiday, and nothing can beat it. (Did a similar thing in Norfolk many years ago, but not the houses ) Jay

Thanks everyone!! Glen.....don't worry about Heather.....I have some old boxes of toffees in the back of my wardrobe. I'll get a nice postcard of Oxford and stick it to the front......that'll do just fine, don't you think? Don't tell anyone though, or everyone will want some..... Merry

Phoenix Report 2 Aug 2006 17:18

Have a wonderful time, Merry. I'm not *really* jealous that your ancestors come from such a nice part of the country, or that their houses are still standing (when most of mine fell down before ever there was a slum clearance!) Enjoy your holiday to the full.

Lucky you Merry, I went on a coach trip to Moreton in Marsh about thirty miles from Oxford where my grandfather came from yesterday and met a very helpful librarian who found me all sorts of bits and pieces including records of the purchase of a cottage in 1741 by an ancestor and an account by a former pupil of one of my grandfather's sisters. . She was a tall quite large lady who always wore rather old-fashioned clothes, long sleeved silk or woollen dresses which had modesty vests and fairly long skirts and large lace up shoes. Her charlady used to hang up the most formidable combination knickers I have ever seen'. I remember my aunts as old ladies and can confirm the combination knickers as we used to have to go on shopping trips to Bath to buy such garments. I also found the site of my great grandfather's shop and was pleased to see the road is called Horne place. Anne
