Snowdrops in Bloom Report 9 Aug 2006 17:01

Hello Everyone As promised here are the results of my visit to Northallerton. I have been quite successful (with the help of my little pixie friend who wishes to remain anonymous!) and, where possible, have got one image for each person. I say where possible because I did break the printer (sure it was the lady in front of me and it just didn’t work when it was my turn) and so couldn’t print all I wanted - but they did let me stay on and look at more registers so that turned out well in the end!!! If anyone doesn’t want to pm me with their private email for the scanned image (where noted) just let me know and I shall go through the details here. I shall address each of you in turn as you posted on the board: Margaret Warn - got your baptismal record – pm me for a scanned image Christine Cocks - my one disappointment of the day I’m afraid Christine. Couldn’t find anything on Arthur Bennet - searched from 1860 – 1890 and didn’t find ANY Bennetts. SORRY Janet in Yorkshire - got your marriage details – pm me for a scanned image Lesley Potts - No baptismal record found I’m afraid BUT did get the marriage certificate – pm me for a scanned image. Kay Russell – well you struck lucky!!!!! No baptism for Jane Pease in 1810. But I did find a marriage for Ann Wilson and Thomas Pease in 1811 – what’s the connection you may ask, well there was a Jane Wilson born to an Ann Wilson (single woman) in 1810!!!!! SO I have the image for Jane’s baptism AND Ann and Thomas’ marriage the following year. Oh yeah, I also found 1 sister for Jane 11 cousins of Janes (ie Thomas’ brothers and their wives children) and 1 of those cousins goes on to have a child herself in 1846 – pm me for details and scanned images. Vicky the Viking - got the marriage cert of William Hawkin and Margaret Pounder – pm me for image Cath RJ - this unfortunately is when the printer broke down but I can tell you the baptism was found and I can confirm that Mary daughter of James Shutt was baptized on 17 May 1807 at Thornton. Laura the Explorer – this means the printer was also not working for you but I can tell you I found the baptismal details for John, William, George and Christopher!!! – no Robinson though! Couldn’t find any mention of Farrington in Skeeby either. And finally John - asked about the move to Harrogate and it has been mooted but has been put on hold for now/forseeable future as it's all entwined with the National Heritage and Lottery Funding. Even if it does go ahead they will make copies of all the fiche/films/records they have and simply open another office in Harrogate and this will take years to complete. So, all in all, it's not something that's going to happen in the immediate future but MAY happen longterm (and the sooner they do it the better I say!!!!!) Snowdrops

Many thanks, Snowdrop, pm on way - how do we reimburse you for cost of making copies? Also, thanks for finding out about proposed move - IF it ever comes off, will be great to have choice of venues and should make it easier to get appointments! Jay

Janet - and everyone else, Please don't think of trying to reimburse me - the copies are only pennies and it would be too much hassle for all involved. It's my pleasure to do this for people and I did the copies off my own back so I don't expect to be compensated. Thanks for the offer though - I just want you all to enjoy them! Snowdrops

While I'm disappointed that you didn't find anything, that doesn't take away my gratitude (and respect) for the efforts made on my behalf. If you'd be kind enough to let me know which records you searched, I can note down where/when not to bother looking for myself - that way, your efforts won't be wasted. Thank you very much for trying - and so hard! Christine

Hi Snowdrops, Sorry I didn't reply earlier, thanks for asking about the relocation. Hi Ann, I am afraid that I agree with Snowdrops. I'd love to see the records at Northallerton move to Harrogate. It takes me around 20 hours to get to Harrogate as it is. If I can cut out that extra 45mins-1hr getting from Harrogate to Northallerton I'd be very happy. John
