On more than one occasion I have e-mailed an obvious match but received no reply. After a month or two I have decided they're not going to reply and used the search facility to bring up all the people with the surname I was interested in. Quickly scrolling down I look out for the word 'yes' next to the contact name. Every time that their name comes up I make a note of the name, birth date and location next to it. I can build up quite a list of names that way without having access to their family tree. I can then use that list to contact other people researching the same names and establish a family tree that way. There's nothing wrong with this, is there?

No, Paul I don't see anything wrong in that at all, as long as it's used as a basis for further research and you go on to 'prove' the line.

Hi, I have 44 hotmatches with one person. Having emailed them a few times in case they weren't on here much, I still have had no reply. Every time I 'prove' that someone belongs in my family and add them, i have another match with that one person. As was said above, I can't see a problem with writing down all the details you find and then going on to research them to make sure they are the same family. I haven't done it yet but can't see any problem in doing so. Good luck, Bex

I do it too - but only so that I can have a good snigger at where they have gone so tragically wrong ....which they would know about, if they had replied to my messages! OC

Liz..... From the Home page, go to Search for People, then Name Search. You may need to narrow down the date range to make it more manageable.

More power to you Paul! I'm sick of messaging people and not getting any reply- why do they bother to register on this site? Thanks Allie

Paul I dont see anything wrong with that. I do it sometimes too, but I always check data as well with the census and BMD indexes.

I do that also Paul and very useful it is too (even if it does mean doing a people-jigsaw with all the names!) Bev x

Yes, but Gillian and Crone, surely by allowing people to muddy the water like that, this wrong information will be passed around the genealogy community and become perpetuated. I'm not sure I agree with this approach, even though I respect your motives.

An Olde Crone

An Olde Crone Report 13 Aug 2006 19:22

Gillian I have come to the conclusion that some people just don't want an accurate tree, if it means they have to abandon all their eagerly collected 'internet people'. Seven people on GR have one branch of my tree from 1700 onwards. They are all wrong and they all copied each other's information (but not mine). I got so furious with constant hotmatches that I emailed three of them, telling them that they cannot POSSIBLY be descended from the sibling of my 7 x GGF, because that sibling died age 2. Its in the Parish Register - but it isnt on the Internet. Those three people still have their wildly incorrect information on here. Last time I ever offer any 'free' information to anyone. OC

We need our own Police Force with powers of arrest and detention. I'd like a warrant to get hold of some people's trees.
