How interesting Jill! My granfdfather was also given his mother's maiden name as his middle name. Strange people these ancestors of ours!

Sometimes children were named after famous people, such as the king or queen. Look how popular the name Alfie became when Alfie Moon was a character on Eastenders!

There was a message about this back in March posted by Ed Barber - so the credit is his: 'naming pattern used early 1700s - this pattern faded out gradually in the mid 1800s, seemingly there are grounds to suggest it was often used. the FIRST SON was named after the FATHER'S FATHER. the SECOND SON was named after the MOTHER'S FATHER. the THIRD SON was named after the FATHER, the FOURTH SON was named after the FATHER'S ELDEST BROTHER. The FIRST DAUGHTER was named after the MOTHER'S MOTHER. the SECOND DAUGHTER was named after the FATHER'S MOTHER. the THIRD DAUGHTER was named after the MOTHER. the FOURTH DAUGHTER after the MOTHER'S ELDEST SISTER - no mention is made of patterns that are outside the above parameters' Jill p.s. Maybe they just fancied a change?? Whilst naming patterns are often quite strong they are not set in stone - perhaps Mum put her foot down. Anne

Two branches of my dad's side of the family handed down names; one branch did that for at least 6 generations......My grandfather only had 5 siblings - two have names that I don't see handed down......Any ideas whom they could be named after, please?
