Glen In Tinsel Knickers Report 26 Aug 2006 11:10

From my computer i selected the name of the drive (stick),then opened the drive to see what was stored on it. It listed my backup files, pictures, census etc that i had transferred. The disc backups i made aren't showing the contents everytime,so i am wary of using them. I'm no techie at all,but the stick was supposed to be plug and play,i had to download a driver first though!! At least it does show some files that i can open and they are my FTM backups so i have the major things i need.My certs are held on memory cards that fit my printer, saved on my pc and of course i have the paper copies from the register offices. Glen, After reading all this I bet your head is swimming (mine is). just a little question how do you know the stick has worked. Rod

Right Got a memory stick and the pc won't recognise it,it is supposed to work with XP with no additional drivers and works with 1.1 and 2.0 USB. CD-R playing up,sometimes the discs i saved yesterday appear ok,other times they have no info stored (apparently!!!) So i don't know if anything is backing up or not,my last FTM disc backup was ok,three weeks ago,but has only 380 names,my tree now stands at nearly 500,(and is the backup ok?I don't know) Starting to get a wee bit nervous now. Sorry Glen -posted the thread about backing up your favourites and then had to disappear. I see Snowdrops has answered your query.

Hi again Elaine I have managed to backup My Documents, printed off a couple of mega vital e-mails and messages. As for favourites i haven't managed that (it wasn't that long ago i found how to add to my favourites anyway. All my favourites are genealogy based, some specific to Norfolk. I'm fresh out of discs and getting the stick tomorrow, but after reading the other thread from yesterday i'm a bit lost on the favourites bit.Where are they stored? I only ever work from my ISP toolbar (AOL),the kids go through ISP and Outlook Express/MSN as they often use Messenger (?) things. Glen

Just thought of another one - have you saved your favourite/bookmarked web site addresses. You should be able to export or save these to a disc.

Elaine

Elaine Report 24 Aug 2006 16:59

Have you got the master program discs - such as Microsoft Office etc - as you will have to reload them again. (Not much you can do if you haven´t though!)

Elaine

Elaine Report 24 Aug 2006 16:57

Have you backed up your My Documents folders - general letters etc.?

Any e-mails that have a major importance are stored on my ISP facility, things like e-mail notification of GR messages are not a major problem. I always save cert order confirmations etc and print out a hard copy of card transactions and suchlike.I think that is pretty much sorted, just got to record the e-mail addys i have as a safeguard too. At least my GR messages are off the pc anyway,so anything that is a major need there is safe(ish) Glen

Glen there are certain things you will need to back up such as email messages, addresses and settings if you are using an email client such as Outlook etc - I posted a guide yesterday about backing up and restoring messages and hope to post later today about backing up other things including addresses. As far as your photos are concerned there are plenty of online storage sites with facilities for that, including y*hoo. Depending on your ISP you may also have your own personal online 'briefcase' where you can store files too. Just remember that when Windows is reinstalled you will lose EVERYTHING currently on your computer so make sure you have a good look and decide what you want to save. I'll be about later anyway if you need any advice.

Hi Errol Thanks for the reply, I won't be doing the job myself, the chap who built the PC will be doing it. It came about when i found Paint and Games were missing,he checked last night and carried out a restore, some programmes reappeared but not all of them. It looks like certain components of Windows have been deleted over a period of time. The restore point would be so far back it is pre FTM installation. He advised the best thing is to start afresh. Elaine Thanks for the link,IF my cd copies are ok i have three backup sources (cd,memory stick and the link you sent). I think that might just about be the best chance i have to ensure i keep my information. Glen

Elaine I think the free 'yousendit' service has a 100 meg limit not 1 gig - but that ought to be ample anyway. As far as the email is concerned, it doesn't need to be downloaded - it can sit on your email service provider's server until ready to download as normal

Glen - there are a number of issues you need to be aware of if you are attempting a complete reinstall of Windows but it is not as daunting as it may sound. I'm a little busy at the mo but will try to catch up later if you need some advice (sorry I can't be of more help right now but promise I'll bbl).

sorry meant to say I found the link on the following web page http://totd.squarespace(.)com/tip-of-the-day-blog/2004/10/4/emailing-large-files-wwwyousenditcom.html have heard that it works well.

Elaine

Elaine Report 24 Aug 2006 15:22

Glen - have a look at this Emailing LARGE files www.yousendit(.)com If have a file that's too big to send out by e-mail -- usually because the recipient's e-mail account won't allow file transfers over a certain size, try You Send It. You can upload files up to 1 Gigabyte in size, and the recipient receives an e-mail directing them to the site to download the file. You can even send your file securely, if necessary. Best of all? The service is FREE. Have you got another computer you can send your large FTM file email to -. if not am more than happy to help out if you want me to look after it until you sort things out. Promise I wont peep!

Part of my problem is that the copies to CD aren't successful. I keep getting the CD wizard closing down BEFORE the operation has finished.(so that is why i'm heading for the stick option too,but i have to get one yet). The CD writing problem only started this week, but i want to be safe. Glen
