Hi Christell, Are you sure these are Hot Matches you are getting and not just contacts from other members? You don't have to respond to Hot Matches unless there is a match. Cheers, Horatia

I have checked 'My Account' details, and the Hot Match box IS unchecked. I still keep getting them though!! I have recently been inundated with messages from members saying they've had a message from GR that they have a match with someone in my tree: 'Unknown Unknown' I have so far dutifully replied to each and every one, but it is now getting beyond a GR joke!! I have never had any names in Hot Matches beyond those beginning with 'C' and now have around 20 something pages to get rid of. I think this site has plenty of more efficient ways of searching for our rellies than Hot Matches. Christel

Anne and Lesley You don't have to tick the box on the side of the list to make them go away, as you say it only saves them. Click on 'discard' at the bottom of the page where you look at the person's details, this will get rid of them altogether and I find it makes the whole process quicker. Jennie

I've had a few of these myself and it kind of leaves you wondering if you've gone mad. I knew it wasn't me though, as I haven't bothered with about 6 emails concerning my 'hot matches'. They're just sat in my email folder for genes, unread and not bothered with. I also find that some people contact you to see if there is a match and never get back to say if it is or not. They just leave you hanging in the air or you have to go and check yourself - if you have access to their tree. I have also had contacts get in touch and demand to know why I haven't put them in my tree yet.

I wish more GR users WOULD read these boards! The info on these boards is more useful than much of what is on the GR Home Page! :-) Cheers, Horatia

Hi Allie, I must admit I don't seem to get as many contacts as I once did but that might be because it is summer. Everyone is on holiday or out and about making the most of the fine weather. When winter comes or after WDYTYA has been aired, more contacts might start wending their way again (hopefully)! I also think some people lose interest once they see how much work family history involves and time and money - some people can't take it! ;-) Cheers, Horatia

Hi All Why is it that no-one ever seems to contact me from a hotmatch sent to them? Also I seem always be sending messages to people - and half of them don't get back to me. These are usually good matches or at least possibilities not the so-called match for my Fred Bloggs born in London with Fred from Canberra! Why bother to join the site if you're not interested in finding connections? Allie x

Another reason i stopped Hot Matches, one of my names happens to match with Heather, she has her hooks into me far too much without being related!! Glen

Kate, You're quite correct! I wish I could turn off Bill's Hot Matches. I don't want him sending me a message every time his Hot Matches don't match! Cheers, Horatia

Kate

Kate Report 26 Aug 2006 17:47

I've had a few of those 'replies' too and it can be annoying. Turning off your hot matches won't solve the problem, though, will it, because as far as I know, turning off your own hot matches doesn't stop somebody else getting the names from your tree as hot matches, does it? Kate.

Big Shaz Report 26 Aug 2006 15:52

Thankyou Horatio.... this explains why I have been getting similar messages!! I thought it was odd that people were contacting me with a sort of 'reply' tone when I hadn't even contacted them and now I know why! Half of my so called HOT matches are pretty cold too... matching names and date of birth but mine will be born Glasgow and there's will be born in Devon?? Shaz

Hi Anne, No probs. Wasn't having a go at you, just trying to show what these pointless messages look like and how you can deduce they are a result of a Hot Match. I've messaged the chap explaining that I didn't send the match out so I hope he understands now. Cheers, Horatia I'm gonna look at Docs Online to see if me medal is there yet!!! ;-) Tee-Hee!

Anne Report 26 Aug 2006 14:56

Sorry, Horatia, Iwasn't doubting that you had the message, just saying I didn't have that experience as a prelude to explaining the (tortuous) way of deleting them for those that asked. :-) Anne

I have my hotmatches ''off'' at the moment, but there was one set I had which I'd never have noticed on ''my tree matches'' (my usual daily check) because there were no places mentioned. I followed it up because there was a set of names + DoBs which matched a set of mine. Christine

The GR website is so hard to get to grips with for most people that I 'm surprised we aren't all awarded a medal for Gallantry and Fortitude! ;-) Cheers, Horatia

Glen In Tinsel Knickers

Glen In Tinsel Knickers Report 26 Aug 2006 14:48

I stopped Hot Matches in the end and use the tree search,i find more control as i don't fly off at a tangent with a name that i'm not really looking for suddenly grabbing my attention. I have had a few messages from other people, but always find they are looking at the name and less so at the place/year of birth, hence only three positive matches since December. Another problem i have is that several names in my tree continue through several generations, and i have often had messages about say Page Goulson.Well i have 7 Page Goulsons, all born in the same county (and all related),but never know which one they are refering too. When born would help. Yes Hot Matches has flaws, but the main problems come about by misusing what information is presented. It doesn't take a degree in rocket science to discount most of the matches to a particular name. Glen

Oh right that explains why Ive received messages just saying 'No' etc. When Ive never even messaged that person in the 1st place!!
