If I get another person who sends me a message saying sorry we don't have a connection after receiving a list of Hot Matches from GR I will SCREAM!!! Please understand that individual members DO NOT send out Hot Matches - GR does. If there isn't a match you aren't compelled to reply especially when there isn't a connection!! I must have had a half dozen of these types of contacts and they are very frustrating - especially when you think you may have a contact from someone who IS related! Feel better for that rant. I know we were all newbies once; but there is no excuse for not reading what the website is all about. Cheers, Horatia

I decided not to have my hot matches as they were driving me mad having to delete the majority of them. I check my tree matches most days and I find this suits me better....or am I missing something and living up to my name once again LOL !! Linda

What annoys me is that some are so glaringly wrong & could not possibly be 'hot' ! names & dates match, but the counties may be separated by 500 miles.

Yes, but why do these people feel compelled to reply and say the Hot Matches are wrong - I don't send them out - GR does. Why don't they clutter up GR's inbox with their pointless e-mails instead of mine??!! :-( Cheers, Horatia

Many of the Hot Matches are totally pointless but I have to say that I have just made contact with my great niece through a hot match. I would never have bothered to search for her father's name individually; but I am so pleased to make contact with her. If you receive hot matches, please just DELETE those that aren't relevant, (which will be the majority of them)! Don't respond to those that don't match!!!!!! However, there is the odd nugget of gold nestling amongst the trash! It's just a shame that because most of the entries are false it tends to make people not take them seriously. Cheers, Horatia

Could someone tell me please how to stop GR sending Hot Matches, as I've never had one that has been of any use. Stella

Yes, log into your account details in GR and there is a check box in those details concerning Hot Matches. You can tick or untick the box depending on what you want to do. Here is what you will see near the bottom of the account details page: Do you wish to be notified by a hot matches or new names email when another member enters a family name that already exists in your tree? Take the tick out of the Yes box if you don't want any further hot matches sent to you. Cheers, Horatia

Although I have plenty of 'duff' hot matches I've never had anyone emailing me about a hot match! Perhaps I've just been lucky. Each time they arrive I just go through those that are new and I have not contacted before - view them - and (nearly always) delete them. (Some look interesting but I take the view that they can contact me if they want to - they never do! To delete Hot Matches (or make them invisible anyway) go through the list, tick the ones you don't want and then AT THE BOTTOM of the page click 'save'. (bizarrely this saves your choice to delete!) When you do that you are taken back to page one and then you have to scroll through to the page you were on before - where you find that, magically, the order has changed. Take a deep breath and continue the process!!!! :-)) This is how I deal with them each time but am reluctant to stop them because there just might be a good one! Anne

Anne, The reason I know the pointless message I received was down to a Hot Match was because I hadn't contacted him; but he said to me: Hi Horatia, Sorry. Ours is from Hull, Yorkshire. Bill What else could it be but a response from a Hot Match?

Oh right that explains why Ive received messages just saying 'No' etc. When Ive never even messaged that person in the 1st place!!

I stopped Hot Matches in the end and use the tree search,i find more control as i don't fly off at a tangent with a name that i'm not really looking for suddenly grabbing my attention. I have had a few messages from other people, but always find they are looking at the name and less so at the place/year of birth, hence only three positive matches since December. Another problem i have is that several names in my tree continue through several generations, and i have often had messages about say Page Goulson.Well i have 7 Page Goulsons, all born in the same county (and all related),but never know which one they are refering too. When born would help. Yes Hot Matches has flaws, but the main problems come about by misusing what information is presented. It doesn't take a degree in rocket science to discount most of the matches to a particular name. The GR website is so hard to get to grips with for most people that I 'm surprised we aren't all awarded a medal for Gallantry and Fortitude! ;-) Cheers, Horatia

I have my hotmatches ''off'' at the moment, but there was one set I had which I'd never have noticed on ''my tree matches'' (my usual daily check) because there were no places mentioned. I followed it up because there was a set of names + DoBs which matched a set of mine. Christine

Anne Report 26 Aug 2006 14:56

Sorry, Horatia, Iwasn't doubting that you had the message, just saying I didn't have that experience as a prelude to explaining the (tortuous) way of deleting them for those that asked. :-) Anne

Hi Anne, No probs. Wasn't having a go at you, just trying to show what these pointless messages look like and how you can deduce they are a result of a Hot Match. I've messaged the chap explaining that I didn't send the match out so I hope he understands now. Cheers, Horatia I'm gonna look at Docs Online to see if me medal is there yet!!! ;-) Tee-Hee!
