Yep, I've seen all them, but they are from Clerkenwell, Marylebone and a lot in West London, even a family of Ivey's living in the Tower of London on there. Mine weren't that adventurous, they didn't even make it down the road Whitechapel, there are Ivey's in Hackney that arn't mine, as mine didn't go 'that far norf' ha ha. But as time went on, during the 1920's some ventured out of Poplar/Limehouse and made it to Plaistow! They were a very easy line to trace, an unusual name, and stayed in the same place for 150 years! My Mum's family made up for that though, her Mum was a Romany Gypsy.. say no more! Sandra

No sorry Jeanne, thanks for looking anyway. I have a will dated 1794, belonging to Thomas Ivey, a shipwright of Stoke Demeral, Devon, now living in Poplar, in the parish of St Dunstan. It mentions his sister Sarah, brother William and son William. This son William was a Bargebuilder, his son was called Richard, who was a Blacksmith, and so on down the line (the eldest, always a Richard & a Blacksmith, 'till Dad's Uncle Dickie who was a builder!) In all the documents I have seen, the name has been spelt Ivey. Thanks a lot anyway for your time. And yes, it definatly IS a small world. Sandra

My husbands uncle Peter McDonnell (abt 1930) went to school with Kenny Lynch..................and I am not sure how long after her husband died, but Maud married again - Harry Latham - not sure if he lived in Canton Street with her, but he definately lived in Burdett Road with her. What a small world, talk about 6 degrees of seperation!!

27 is only 9 houses down, I wonder if my Dad remembers them? Dad was evacuated from Randalls Buildings, to Surrey, when he came back after the war, they were living in Canton St. Mum moved in with Dad & Nan when they got married in 1955, and moved out in '64. Dad did say about a 'Snotty little boy' who used to live opposite him, and used to play with him (Dad was born in 1930) This 'snotty nosed' urchin turned out to be Kenny Lynch! You'll have to ask your husband if his Dad ever mentioned him. Dad's other claim to fame, his cousin married Vera Lynn's (Vera Welch) sister. Vera Lynn used to live in East Ham. Sandra

Sandra Butler House was in Burdett Road. His Nan eventually moved out of the East End to Aveley. His mum lives in South Benfleet. We still live in London. His nan's maiden name was Lay and at the time of her son Michael's birth in 1937 lived at 71 Canton Street. When her husband, Harry McDonnell died in 1945 she was at 27 Canton Street - (I think the death cert has the wrong house number on it)they moved in 1969 to Butler House. Her eldest son also called Harry who was drowned in 1945 aged 13, and her son Michael was killed in Cyprus while doing National Service in 1957. I cannot find her husbands birth, and becase the children were all so young, they don't remember him or where he came from - except none of them appear to have liked him much. My family on both sides are spread all over the East End, and so diverse. From Mariners in Stepney, Silk Weavers in Spitalfields, to Bank of England Clerks in Shoreditch and Surgeons in Hampstead..........(Dad's lot had a few quid - which didn't filter down!!!) I'll see if I can find any more Ivey's for you. Jeanne

So was Butler house in Canton St? I bet his parents knew my parents. My Ivey's are in Poplar, Limehouse or Stepney. As you know there very much one and the same place, oh, and Bow as well (I think Burdett Rd's in Bow) Any Ivey's in this area, I think you can safely say are 'mine'. My g-granddad Richard's brother George lived in Clemence St, off Burdett Rd. His son Ernest Ivey was wounded in the Somme, but actually died of his wounds while in Le Harve, waiting for the boat home.. so sad, he nearly made it. I found this out about a year ago, no one in the family knew this, is'nt it strange how things are never spoken about. Next year sometime, my cousin and myself are going to go to Le Harve, to put some flowers on his grave, just to say he's not forgotten. Sandra I have lot's of Ivey's - can't name them all, be here all evening, have most of the births thanks to census's & bmd index, but only the baptisms that you have just given me.

NOW he says it was No 9 Butler House - he can't remember the number at Canton Street, but they moved in 1969. His mum was living there at the time of her marriage in 1964 with her mum Maud. Silly old sod.......... So, what IVEY's don't you have, and approx years you are looking. Jeanne

Nan's name, (she was the paying tenant) was Isabella Jacobs - nee Ivey. She used to live in Randalls Buildings, which were between Pekin & Canton Street's, but got bombed out, so move to 9, Canton Street during the war. In the 60's, we moved to East Ham, Nan moved to my Aunts in Wickford. Sandra
