Have you found Caroline and Adolphus in 1881, as far as I can see, they are also missing. Jennifer

Click on 1st Battalion, then scroll down the years to 1881, it says Colchester immediately above Egypt. Jennifer

jennifer, just had a look at that site, and its great. it said that the regiment were in egypt in 1882, which i was hoping, as there was a rumour in our family, that he was only in the army for a short time, but that he served in egypt. however, i couldnt see where u found that they were in colchester in 81

Ages on death certificates are notoriously unreliable, he was almost certainly born in 1856, he was four years old on the 1861 Census. This looks like his birth Name: William Pudney Year of Registration: 1856 Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep District: Colchester County: Essex Volume: 4a Page: 216 Jennifer

Jennifer Report 12 Sep 2006 11:27

He was most likely abroad in 1881, your best bet will be to search for his military records in The National Archives in class WO. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk Jennifer
