Hello, does anybody know if this surname is Jewish? My husband is a Jones (boo hoo!!) and his grandmother was Ellen Greenhalgh. A few years ago, my husband was found to have a blood disorder - Factor XI deficiency. Apparantly this is quite rare in English people. I googled the disorder and have found that it is very common in Ashknezi Jews. As far as I understand, Ashkenazi Jews were European. I am thinking of trying to do his grandmothers side of the tree and am just wondering how likely they are to turn out to be Jewish - the blood disorder has to originate somewhere!! Thanks and best wishes Carol. |

I always thought Greenhalgh was a good old fashioned Lancashire name! I have never heard of it being Jewish. OC |

Old Crone, you may be right!! I have heard vaguely that it is Jewish, but I usually get things wrong - I AM good at that!! And we do live in Lancashire (well Greater Manchester now)! Thanks for your reply. Best wishes Carol |

Hi Karen, thank you for that link. Just been to have a look and can't see anything to reinforce the idea that Greenhalgh is Jewish! Probably me barking up the wrong tree as usual! Best wishes Carol |
