I am always suspicious when a marriage cert says someone is 21 - often they weren't, not quite! Do you have a death cert? OC

Sorry I had a problem with my connection then. OC is right you should be wary of the age 21. Before 1969 anyone under the age of 21 would need their parents consent to marry. After 1969 the age was reduced to 18. So he probably just added a few months to his age, saved all the hassle of consent then. Its not unusual for people to lie on their marriage certificates.

No the dads dont have to present, the same as they arent now. Just the bride and groom need to be there, and the witnesses of course. Also his father could have been dead at the time of marriage, sometimes they put deceased, sometimes they dont. The information on a certificate is only as good as the information that is given.

Also my great grandfather was illegitimate, but on his marriage certificate not only did he reduce his age (his bride was 17 he was nearly 30)....but he also gave his grandfathers name as his fathers name!

lol Well I would be tempted by the birth certificate that gave the middle name as begining with L. Or you could always order both, and see what the fathers occupations are.
