lol Well I would be tempted by the birth certificate that gave the middle name as begining with L. Or you could always order both, and see what the fathers occupations are.

ahh ok thank you willo i think the only way i will find out for sure. is if somebody on here has a brother or sister for walter, and can say for sure that his mum was humphry or carter and they now that he married my nan. steve

Also my great grandfather was illegitimate, but on his marriage certificate not only did he reduce his age (his bride was 17 he was nearly 30)....but he also gave his grandfathers name as his fathers name!

Willow Report 25 Oct 2006 15:51

No the dads dont have to present, the same as they arent now. Just the bride and groom need to be there, and the witnesses of course. Also his father could have been dead at the time of marriage, sometimes they put deceased, sometimes they dont. The information on a certificate is only as good as the information that is given.

ahhh ok but his fathers name is on the cert would he not have been at the wedding though ???? steve

Sorry I had a problem with my connection then. OC is right you should be wary of the age 21. Before 1969 anyone under the age of 21 would need their parents consent to marry. After 1969 the age was reduced to 18. So he probably just added a few months to his age, saved all the hassle of consent then. Its not unusual for people to lie on their marriage certificates.

I am always suspicious when a marriage cert says someone is 21 - often they weren't, not quite! Do you have a death cert? OC

Stephen

Stephen Report 25 Oct 2006 15:12

I wouldn't go on just the middle initial- i had a rellie that i always knew by Bertie- but on his marriage cert he's Albert- then on the census he is Albert H. My point- if i'd had just gone on trying to find 'Bertie', i would have got no where. In those days, it was a matter of whether they felt like putting there name down in full!

Stephen

Stephen Report 25 Oct 2006 14:58

Willow

Willow Report 25 Oct 2006 14:55

On marriage certificate what does it give his fathers occupation as? If you was to order the birth cert with the middle name L then you can cross reference for the middle name Leslie and the fathers occupation.

Stephen

Stephen Report 25 Oct 2006 14:53

no he could still be alive for all i know as i said i know next to nothing about him sorry steve

Willow

Willow Report 25 Oct 2006 14:51

and you have no idea when he died?

Stephen

Stephen Report 25 Oct 2006 14:47

hmmm yes i see what you are saying but if i go by his age on the wedding cert he is born in 1919 not 1920 like the 1 with the middle name L why could we not be ramshead or something like that JONES what a nightmare name this is lol steve
