I don't know what to expect, Keith. All I know about her is that in the 1851 census she was living with her Uncle William Major, an innkeeper, in Newton Abbot, her mother having died when she was 3 years old. In 1852 she was mentioned in Uncle William's will so she was still unmarried. I was curious to see whether she eventually did get married or not. Maybe she ran the inn by herself. Could you possibly look up her up on the 1861 census for me [my subscription to Ancestry has run out].

I appreciate that it is a different quarter, but when you search for Samuel getting married he is on his own on the page, coincidence or late/wrong entry?

In the 1861 on ancestry there is a Thomas Harris born Wales age 26, married to a Sarah aged 24 born ireland Daughter Mary Ann 5 but a son John age 15 (that doesn't make sense I am sure he can't be a son because of the age). If you want all the details and have not got access to 1861 ancestry i will look again. I could not find a Thomas Harris married to a Ruth. Ann Glos

I trawled the images (only joking), no, put only vol and page number and year in and looked for Newton Abbott. Is this who you were expecting?

Unless you have found that Cull entry in the June quarter on the original GRO index I'm afraid the fact it has the same volume and page reference is just a coincidence Keith. Newton Abbot entries would have been in that volume and within a similar page allocation every quarter.

I am looking for the husband of SARAH MAJOR from Newton Abbot, Devon. On the Ancestry marriage index for 1853 April quarter there are only 3 names on the page: Sarah Major; Ruth Colleyhole and Thomas Harris. Any ideas anyone?? Or was polygamy allowed in the 1800's!!
