Jane was married to John before she married James Sherwood. Could be in 1861, that Jane gave the details, so when asked her surname said McGinty which was taken to mean that was the rest of the family's too. If you get the marriage cert, it should confirm how many times she was married. I have been unable to find any of the birth certs for the John, Joseph, Richard or Sarah :(

Tracey - where did you find the info about Jane being married to a John? Sarah - Going back to the possible two James' theory - if the death entry you found is your James Sherwood aged 74, then that would give him a birthyear of approx 1815. The James McGinty/McGinnessy gives birth year of abt 1828. Quite a bit of a difference - again, adds weight to this theory of two different men. Hope I'm not leading you on a wild goose chase but if this were my ancestor, this is the route I'd be taking, looking for certs to either prove/disprove the various theories until the only the truth is left. I think Jane's marriage cert to James Sherwood would be a good place to start. Would this show if she was married before? If Jane did marry twice then James Sherwood could have been born in 1815 and died aged 74 in 1889 as James Maggensey would be another person altogether. All the information does tie in and does all sound like it fits. Where does John come into it? Do you have a surname for him Tracey. Ps In case I forget when I log off. Thank you all so much for your help, you could have just helped solve a big mystery!!!

just a quick one, could jane and John have been brother and sister or father and daughter?. they are all shown as lodgers but even if they were lodgers would it show them as married/father/daughter? or is it just their relationship to the head of the household?

Got her first marriage... Marriages Sep 1843 CURLEY Jane McGINTY John Isle of Wight 8 358 The relationship shown is that to the head of the house (the lodging house keeper). Both are shown as married, though in fairness they could be brother and sister but I doubt it. His occupation is Pensioner - hers is Pensioners Wife. How about this lot from 1841?! Thomas Curley abt 1781 Not in County Carisbrooke Hampshire (Labourer) Sarah Curley abt 1796 Not in County Carisbrooke Hampshire Mary Curley abt 1816 Not in County Carisbrooke Hampshire Charlotte Curley abt 1821 Hampshire, England Carisbrooke Hampshire Amelia Curley abt 1826 Hampshire, England Carisbrooke Hampshire Henry Curley abt 1827 Hampshire, England Carisbrooke Hampshire >> Jane Curley abt 1829 Hampshire, England Carisbrooke Hampshire Sophia Curley abt 1830 Hampshire, England Carisbrooke Hampshire Emily Curley abt 1834 Hampshire, England Carisbrooke Hampshire William Curley abt 1836 Hampshire, England Carisbrooke Hampshire John Henry Curley abt 1838 Hampshire, England Carisbrooke Hampshire Comes under Isle of Wight. Ah, well done, Tracey. So, we pretty much have everything on Jane - it's just the hubby thing that needs sorting out LOL. Very strange how John McGinty turns into James McGinnessy - but as someone said in a previous post, maybe Jane gave the information and they put James under her surname. Not unknown of - I have an ancestor (surname Ingles) who left his wife and took all the children with him and was living with a woman with surname Johnson - on the census they were all given the surname Johnson for some reason! Well now - that would mean that James McGinnessy was not a McGinnessy but something else. Going round in circles a bit - but I think you are right, Sarah - getting Jane's marriage certs will clarify things hopefully. Yes, if she was honest she should have put down any former married names, plus her maiden name on her marriage cert to James Shearwood. Good luck - hope you solve it all - will no doubt get your 2007 off to a good start! Athena

Sarah, I've not done much on that side of my tree, but I have Sherwoods in my family who I understand to have originated from Ireland! I can't see an immediate connection, but PM me and we can maybe have a chat about it! Mandy
