Ron, Might have to do that. Have now sussed that Firewall etc is included in the BT Broadband package. Just spoke to a man in their IT department and he had never heard of ScanDisk. Well that says it all really doesn't it. BT have decided that I need to alter my security settings - although I have already done that by lowering them by just one setting. If that does not sort out the Ancestry problem then it will cost me £75 to book for their IT section to send someone out to me. Thank you everyone for your input in this matter. Will take a copy of the thread and read through it all again and try out one or two things. Thanks again folks. Maureen

Try re-installing Windows, run the original disk and it will eventually ask you if you want to keep your files and folders, say yes. Ron www*genealogyprinters*com

Oh dear just had another problem. Opened up a Word document to copy and paste into and it froze two browser windows. Had to open a another browser window to get back to this site. Not a happy bunny. When I have calmed down a bit BT will be getting a call as I have had enough of this. Maureen

Bob, Sorry but took the dogs out for a walk. Smelling salts - oh dear. Running on Windows 98 Second Edition. A lot of things were altered/deleted/added by the IT man on Thursday who told me that it is extremely difficult to instal the Broadband on Windows 98SE and he had only been succesful a couple of times. All earlier software to do with my original BT Internet also got deleted including some Spyware software. The IT man had to reload some bits from the original Windows disk. This was due to me being told to delete some files during the installation process which of course resulted in failure to instal the software. Had no real problems with the computer before or on the previous BT Internet so I am presuming that the problems I have found so far are related to the Broadband installation and the duff info I was given. Sorry for the delay, the wife has just brought me round with the smelling salts ! You need to have an AV for sure. Are you on XP ? it should have nagged you about it ( unless turned off) Get AVG or Avast (both free) and let them run a scan. Looks like your firewall (router or XP) is turned on. Might not cure the problem but should be done anyway. Bob

You don't say what AV and Firewall you have. It has been known for some (like McAfee ) to block certain parts of web pages. If you have the hardware router Firewall on (which you should have ) you can turn them both off and then access Ancestry only. Have you tried Scandisk in Safe Mode? Bob

I usually do all PC maintenance about every 6 weeks - cookies, temporary internet files, disk clean, disk scan and defrag. So did cookies, temporary internet files and disk clean okay at the weekend but ScanDisk will not run properly. Always worked before. Now getting a security message coming up on Ancestry - which I did have once before and their solutions was to delete cookies. Have never downloaded IE7 so still running on IE6. At a loss as to what to do about all this. Maureen

Hi Brenda, Thanks for your reply. Just logged onto site. Everything is BT and yes I have already got problems with their Talk. Can not get a straight answer for any questions on that either. Had no problems with the previous internet contract - I paid for 150 hours a month - and only changed to Broadband because of the promised free evening and weekend calls. Will phone them this afternoon and see what they have to say about it but not very hopeful given their performance over the last few days. Maureen

Maureen I note you mention a router. Are there other PC's using the router which have IE6 ? Does Ancestry work OK on those? If so it would suggest that it's nothing to do with broadband but your installation of IE6. Downloading Firefox and trying Ancestry would also confirm this ( does not interfere with or replace IE, every one should have it as standby at least ) The DNS should flush on reboot in any event, but to be completly sure you can tun it off in Control Panel/administative tools/services (Mine is turned off all the time) Running CCleaner will clean all the crap and sometimes solves problems like this (easiest way of removing this sort of stuff). Just have to remember your passwords and set CC to leave them alone (easy) I assume you have not installed IE7 and then removed it. Bob

It may depend on which Broadband ISP you use. Comment by ' Brenda from Wales ' is very pertinent - TalkTalk is still diabolical and I speak from very recent experience. My PC is doing extremely strange things since I signed up with them even though I have now cancelled and, allegedly, they have not yet connected my telephone line. Have to wait 10 days for BT to recover the line from them so God help me !

Heather, The IT man on Thursday wanted me to upgrade to IE7 but I refused as I had heard that people were having problems with it. Wish I had never agreed to Broadband. Had none of these problems before with my old BT internet. Will have to let battle commence again in the morning which I am not looking forward to. Maureen

Not at all sure if this is relevant. I was speaking to my sister tonight - she has just changed to BT and says shes having enormous problems and they have told her its something to do with BT not recognising IE7. Spoke to son earlier - he has BT broadband and is having same probs with it recognising IE7. Is it worth a google to see if anyone has found a solution - not that I know if this is your problem too.

Glen, Thanks for your reply. Sorry for delay in answering but just logged back onto site. Not sure a system restore would work. My computer was fine on Tuesday 23rd Jan and so was Ancestry as I use it every day to do lookups. This was the last date on my old contract with BT Internet. I had problems with the installation of Broadband on Weds 24th Jan, a long story but given bad info from their technical helpdesk, and I was finally connected Thursday 1st Feb. The first things I did were check emails and then logged straight into GR and Ancestry and got the problems straightaway. Think I will be pestering the one English person I did manage to speak too and thankfully kept a note of the phone number. Not sure I can take anymore overseas call centres !!!!!!
