Hey Karen This is the website for Origins (Scottish, Irish, British) but i'm not sure what information is held on there, most of it is the same as IGI. http://www.originsnetwork*com/ Scotlandspeople.gov.uk is the best site for researching Scottish ancestors. Mhairi

Sorry to butt in, but I've never heard of Scots Origins. I've just discovered some Scottish ancestors, and am wondering whether this site contains anything I can't find on Ancestry?

Why don't you try looking to see if they died after 1855 as there will be loads of info on scottish death certificates

Hey Paul Use the IGI to work out when they where all born then take another look at the page of Janet Stirling births. The earlier the birth date then the lower the reference number on the right hand side, near the 'Click to View'. At least thats what i imagine it would be. Either that or try a search under the name Grant and cross reference? Mhairi

Paul Report 5 Feb 2007 11:20

thanks mhairi as lucj would have it SP is showing 4 Janet Stirling born in Kirkintilloch in 1855!

Also worth bearing in mind that the OPRs on Scotlands People are the registers of the Established Church ONLY. That rules out a heck of a lot of people. I gather that SP are considering addressing this but obviously it's easier said than done. Denis

This extracted entry into the igi suggests that they wheren't married. If she matches with the census and you think this might be one of their children it might be good to view the image. 1855 certs are vastly different and give a lot of info. JANET STIRLING OR GRANT Female -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Event(s): Birth: 16 JUN 1855 Kirkintilloch, Dunbarton, Scotland Christening: Death: Burial: -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Parents: Father: CHARLES STIRLING Mother: ELISABETH GRANT Mhairi

Before 1855 it was not compulsory to 'register' a birth - register not really being the correct word. In the OPR you will mainly find reference to Christenings that took place and if lucky the date of birth as well. Marriage mentions are usually just the date on which the first(or second or third) bannes where read out. And if your really lucky the brides fathers name. Deaths...well there are a few burial records and mort cloth purchases but thats as much as you get. Even after 1855 you arent guaranteed to find a birth/marriage/death because some people did not register them. Either that or they are horribly mis transcribed or even spelt wrong on the oringal copy. Where any of the children born after 1855? (Any in 1855?, thats the best year for certs) The birth certs might show the date and place of the parents wedding. Mhairi

Thanks for all the help guys. It would appear that the child found on IGI born in 1842 was born out of wedlock as they did not get married till 1846 - naughty!!
