Greeting’s Again….Sarah… You asked why Hannah was in the Enderby Workhouse ? I think the reason was that both Richard & Mary died in Oadby :- Burials for St. Peter’s Parish Church Oadby. OADBY BARSBY RICHARD 14.th. MAR 1842 Aged 52 OADBY BARSBY MARY 21.st. APR 1845 Aged 45 Therefore Hannah must have been put into the Workhouse because there was no one else to look after her The Workhouse in Enderby serve the large District of Blaby which in those times included Oadby. Im with you Kath - I had a GGFx2 born in the workhouse in Southwark and at the time wondered why he and mum were in there when they lived a few streets away and had a family there. As you say, workhouses often used as local hospital, not just for what I guess must be difficult deliveries (most mums would just have a couple of neighbours attending at home) but I also had a death in one and I know her family lived nearby and she wasnt a pauper. But in Sarah's case she seems to be saying the child was an orphan in the workhouse.

Have you found your relative in the workhouse on the 1851 census? Was it a female? Workhouses were also used as maternity hospitals, so they may not have actually lived at the workhouse. My grandfather was born in Southwark Workhouse in 1870, but his parents lived in a street just round the corner. Mother and baby were at the workhouse for just under 3 weeks - quite a long confinement compared to today!! Kath. x

Thats a brilliant site Ann, Ive never used it before as I am lucky in not having found any workhouse inmates so far but still very handy for the photos of the areas in which your ancestors were living. I had to larf, when dad hadnt bothered to shave at the weekends my mum would scathingly say to him, 'You look like youve come from Rowton House'. I had no idea what that really meant until I looked on that site!

Do you live in the area Sarah? In which case you could ring the records office and ask if they have the Union records there and then go to the office to look at them.
