I've often found whole families by entering the father's first and second names, and the mother's first name, then using the location and dates to limit the results. The batch number is interesting if it limits the search to one parish, but when I tried this for one family I was looking for, it didn't seem to work properly. The individual I searched on is Isaac Johnson born 28 Sep 1829, chris 18 Jun 1837 Pentrich, parents George Johnson and Mary. This gives the batch number as 7026703. Clicking the batch number and searching again produces results from various bits of Derbyshire, not just Pentrich. Am I doing something wrong? ==updated== Just looked a bit more at this, searched on (what I believe to be) my ancestor Robert Tomlinson, and came up with a batch number beginning with 'C' (C058921). This produced results only from Pentrich (about 2000 of them) but none of the Johnsons who I know were chris on the same day as Robert.

Robert That first batch number you quoted looks a bit suspect - they almost always have a C in front of Christening batches. It sounds more like some sort of transcription record (a pedigree file?) than a parish record. UPDATE Just had a look at Isaac Johnson - it is indeed a submitted entry, and the 'batch' number is a list of all the people that person has submitted to the IGI. You cannot rely on any of the information therein - you must check with parish records. OC

Was just looking on the Hugh Wallis site - it says batch numbers (such as all numerics) are less reliable as they are LDS member submitted entries. So the moral of the story is to only use batch numbers if they have a 'C' or 'M' at the front.

Also look out for batch numbers starting J or K - these seem to be used in parishes where for some reason the IGI extracted the male (J) entries separately from the female (K) entries - in which case make sure you search on both options to get the whole family.
