If you type in the first name and leave surname blank, then search, you come up with every surname, but scroll down below the names and you can refine the search.

thanks Julie, ok next question, how do you search for first name and parents names? I can't find the facility to do this (yep Im stuck again with James's parents) ps. Im searching on ancestry.co.uk cus I dont have credits for this site

Dang I didn't see there was a page 2..lol... I managed to find out where to put first name and parents names then came back to tell you I'd done it only to find your other replies. Anyway I found James as a lodger in 1871 and then at home with his parents Samuel and Elizabeth, brother Jesse and sister Lucy in 1861, now Im trying to find out where the others were in 1871 to see if I can work out why he might have been in lodgings, but I cant find them on 1871 census, am presently searching for first names only, I WILL get there..lol thanks for all your help

oh Julie, you'll have to come and spend a week with me doing my tree...lol I havent found any of them, currently searching 600-650 of Lucys..lol getting very frustrated now. I can't believe you found Samuel, I couldnt find him!! I'll go see if I can find him using your information ! Thanks soooo much.

actually if mum died that could explain why James went into lodgings
