Hi Heather Thanks for all your advice. I think your right, I'm now more convinced that Edwin was Sarah's second husband. Because I'm sure the one you have found on 1881 is my Edwin. So I'm going to get a copy of Roberts birth Certificate and a copy of the marriage you found in 1891. Will get back to you when I have received them and let you know the outcome. Knowing my luck their probably have no connection to my Gran at all. Thanks again I really appreciated your help .I think sometimes when someone else looks at your Brickwall they have a whole new way of looking it and the bricks start tumbling!!!! Will keep you posted Cheryl x

It could be that the family he was with didn't realise he was married.

Do you not have Marys birth cert? That should give mums fullname and also her previous married name.

Heather

Heather Report 31 May 2007 15:53

Looks like a second marriage for Sarah and thats why he is alone in 1881. Id look at that marriage in Notts area for Edwin in early 1881 - money on it!

Cheryl

Cheryl Report 31 May 2007 15:53

Hi Heather You could be on to something!!!!!!! I was wondering if it was a second marriage for Sarah, especially as on the 1891 census there is a ST written by Lily's name where the occupation should be. I haven't got a marriage certificate no,I'm not convinced they were ever married. So if your right what I need is to now find a Sarah born Tamworth with daughter called Lily born 1876 in Tamworth and Mary born Notts 1881.You watch I bet Mary was born after the 1881 Census was taken. Thanks Cheryl x

Hi Liz Not sure, as Edwin was always stated as a Coal Miner. Tracing him prior to his marriage has been a problem as he seems to have been adopted at an early age and his name changed. The only thing my Dad has told me was that his mother Mary had a brother who got killed in a Coal Mining Distaster, and my Dad was called after him. My Dad was called William Henry Foden. But I can't find a Mary with a brother of William or Henry. I'm sure I have the right family in 1901. Someone found me two marriages for Edwin Atkins and a Sarah. First one was in 1861 when he married Sarah Heard. But I can't find a Sarah Heard prior to the marriage stated as a Tailoress. The other is to a Sarah Flint in 1870. but again no trace of her prior to her marriage in 1870. I've found two births for a Robert Atkins in 1890 in Notts, I am just wondering if I send for those certifcates it might help. But knowing my luck they won't be the right one!!!! Thanks for trying Cheryl x

Heather Report 31 May 2007 15:43

I think we have it - the guy in lodgings in 1881 is a coal miner called Edward Atkin - look where he is lodging - Bulwell, Notts - now look at the birth of the last kiddies - Bulwell Notts I think you need to look for a death of Sarahs first hubby - and that marriage in 1891 looks likely their marriage. Sadly freebmd not showing the spouse

Heather

Heather Report 31 May 2007 15:39

Do you have their marriage cert as there is an Edwin Atkin marrying Nottingham district April/May/June quarter of 1891. ALSO have you noticed a hefty gap between the last kiddie and the one before him?

Heather

Heather Report 31 May 2007 15:39

What do you reckon??? Name: Edward Atkin Age: 30 Estimated birth year: abt 1851 Relation: Lodger Gender: Male Where born: Tamworth, Leicestershire, England Civil parish: Hucknall Torkard County/Island: Nottinghamshire Street address: Limb Street Occupation: Coal Miner Registration district: Basford Sub-registration district: Bulwell ED, institution, or vessel: 10 Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Edward Atkin 30 Albert Brackwell 5 George Brackwell 11 Hannah Brackwell 45 James Brackwell 9 Joseph Brackwell 45 William Brackwell 19 William H. Brackwell 1 David Fox Do we know if Sarah is a second wife? Could the kids be hers and so we should be looking for her under a different surname? Do you have their marriage cert?

me either. I tried looking for Edwin and Sarah and little joy, so I changed tactic and looked for Lily who should have been abt6 then. The only Lily with a father Edwin and mother Sarah that I've found is this one: Name: Lily Millward Age: 5 Estimated birth year: abt 1876 Relation: Daughter Father's name: Edwin Mother's name: Sarah Ann Gender: Female Where born: Quarry Bank, Staffordshire, England Civil parish: Kingswinford County/Island: Staffordshire Country: England Street address: 11 Delph Education: Employment status: View image Occupation: Scholar Registration district: Stourbridge Sub-registration district: Kingswinford ED, institution, or vessel: 38 Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Arthur Millward 11 Edwin Millward 43 (manager of bricklayers - born Worcs, Lye) Edwin Millward (7months) James Millward 15 (labourer) Lily Millward 5 Miriam Millward 9 Richard T. Millward 2 Sarah Ann Millward 33 If this is them then I wouldn't know why the name change, or what happened to all the other children (maybe they died) Alternatively, they might have been missed, I have a family not on one of them and the husband is separate listed as widowed...but they then appear as a family again on the next one. it's my guess they may have been travelling at the time or something as they moved approx 250miles around that time.
