A Doctor in a hospital, issues a Medical certificate of death. This is NOT the same thing as the Registration of Death Certificate! You need a medical certificate of death, to register a death and you are then issued with a Registration of Death Certificate, which the Undertaker requires before he can dispose of the body. So, in 1971, his death MUST have been registered, before he could be buried or cremated - no way round that. Why did your relative not register the death, if she was present at the death? Was there an Inquest (in which case it is the Coroner's job to register the death). Can she remember who conducted the funeral? Did she go to the funeral? OC

OC Thanks that helps She didnt register the death coz she is one of 13 children and left it to someone else. We dont yet know the undertaker. would the corner file the death registation in the same way ?

sorry 1907 is all I know about his birth....just looked it was dec quater birth My fred was born dec 1907 ...spilsby 7a 519..on bmd free so the death is june?

Hey Rose, I must need my eyes testing, you're right it is the 21st June, but that is the date of birth. The death is in the jan-feb-mar quarter.

I had a similar problem when trying to find the death of my g grandfather George Newell. I had burial records but couldn't find him in the death index. On the basis that anyone can make a mistake I searched for any variant - and found him registered under the name of Nowell. It seems he had died in a nursing home and the death was registered by a member of staff, combined with the handwriting on the death certificate being really untidy. Might it be worth looking for any variant of Taylor, e.g. Tyler?

It's me again, it could be that the death was registered in a different district to Lincoln. Did you see my update on my previous message? I had this happen to me, I searched everywhere for a death in Wallasey [where the family lived] but I eventually found it registered in the neighbouring district of Birkenhead. You could try contacting the cemetery where he is buried to see if they have the details in their records, as you say, I think you have to have a death certificate before you can be buried.

Yes ...I did think of that will they look it out for us? and if its not been registered can it be done today. Still confussed ...dont the undertaker need the death certificate to do the funeral?

You could try contacting the hospital and asking them for details of the death certificate, it must have been issued there by a doctor before being registered. Was he born on 23rd January 1907? If so, there is a Fred Taylor registered at Leeds, volume 2c, page 760 [Ancestry free bmd]
