I had trouble finding one of my nan's brothers who died as a child - I found out that he was known by his middle name. It wasn't Percy at all but Joseph Percy (the Joseph was named after his father)

Likely reasons are his death was not registered in the name Fred Taylor. Likely he was known as Fred but maybe it was Alfred/ Frederick or Jack. What is the date of death on the headstone. Maybe the headstone has the wrong year of death. It DOES Happen. Sue

If you don't have his death cert, how can you know he died in Lincoln Hospital? If you are going purely on family memory, then they can often be wrong. OC

we know he died in the hospital coz his daughter was there ...she registered her mum death ...but not her fathers !! she is still alive and is wanting the copy of the death cert Can they bury without the death certificate? Headstone says he was 63 but we have checked 5 years each way And it is Fred on all other certificates

You could try contacting the hospital and asking them for details of the death certificate, it must have been issued there by a doctor before being registered. Was he born on 23rd January 1907? If so, there is a Fred Taylor registered at Leeds, volume 2c, page 760 [Ancestry free bmd]

Yes ...I did think of that will they look it out for us? and if its not been registered can it be done today. Still confussed ...dont the undertaker need the death certificate to do the funeral?

Glenn Report 15 Jun 2007 19:41

It's me again, it could be that the death was registered in a different district to Lincoln. Did you see my update on my previous message? I had this happen to me, I searched everywhere for a death in Wallasey [where the family lived] but I eventually found it registered in the neighbouring district of Birkenhead. You could try contacting the cemetery where he is buried to see if they have the details in their records, as you say, I think you have to have a death certificate before you can be buried.

The death Glenn found was for 23rd June. When was your Fred born? Rose

I had a similar problem when trying to find the death of my g grandfather George Newell. I had burial records but couldn't find him in the death index. On the basis that anyone can make a mistake I searched for any variant - and found him registered under the name of Nowell. It seems he had died in a nursing home and the death was registered by a member of staff, combined with the handwriting on the death certificate being really untidy. Might it be worth looking for any variant of Taylor, e.g. Tyler?

Glenn Report 15 Jun 2007 20:44

Hey Rose, I must need my eyes testing, you're right it is the 21st June, but that is the date of birth. The death is in the jan-feb-mar quarter.

If they have him born 23rd June and he was registered in Dec qtr that death might not be the correct one. Rose
