If you do find she is a Chidgy/Chidgey then you may be interested to know that the family are named after the village of Chedzoy near Bridgwater. This is pronounced Chedzee/Chdzee by locals. I've found quite a lot of them living over in the Quantock Hills area of Somerset when I've been researching though I haven't any direct ancestors by that name so wasn't looking really closely. Sue

I can't find her but I had noted the following website: http://www(.)parishregister(.c)om/aboutstp.html#ancestors TRACING YOUR WATERMEN & LIGHTERMEN ANCESTORS If you have a Waterman or Lighterman Ancestor then you are very fortunate indeed. The surviving records of the Company of Watermen & Lightermen are rich and varied, and date back to the late 17th Century. The Bindings books (recording when and to whom an apprentice was 'bound') and the Affidavit birth proof records (noting the date and place of birth of an apprentice) provide a straightforward source of genealogical information. These are the opening two paragraphs. I hope this might help you trace this family.

Help! My great great grandmother appears not to exist except on her marriage certificate. I have a name (Jane Chidey) an age which means she was born 1861 +/- 1 and a place of birth from census records after her marriage in 1880 (Shoreditch), I also have her father's name (Henry Chidey) and his profession (Lighterman). Can I find her (or him)? No! I've tried all the variations on her name I can think of (Chidley, Chitty, Chil, Child etc.) but have drawn a complete blank. Can someone give me any tips of anything else I can try?
