Is anyone living near Crowan Cornwall who could point me in the right direction with regard to land title records? I am searching for an actual address of a farmhouse/house at Carne 1. as per 1841 Census of William Walters and family.

Do you really mean the actual address, or do you want the location? Crowan is still a tiny hamlet today and very much doubt if they bothered with addresses in 1841! OC

Thanks OC. I am looking for an actual building if it still exists to photograph. I live in Australia but have friends that are going to England who could take photos if I can give an actual address/location. Also a Williams family is the mother of William Walters (Watters)

Oh, Chris, sorry, I forgot this stupid site will not let you publish web addresses! If you google 'Crowan, Cornwall', on page 2 I think, you will find extracted Crowan census for 1861. You will see from the layout of the census that 'Carne' is a row of cottages, not a farm. If your man was a farmer, he did not live in a farmhouse. The Cornish Studies Centre is a superb new facility here in Cornwall and if they cannot produce a photo of the area, then no one can! You can access the 'Cornwall Centre' through www.cornwall.gov.uk, or email at cornishstudies.library*@*cornwall.gov.uk remove the asterisks. OC OH FOR GOODNESS SAKE,GR! Thank you Maid Marion, I really need to know the exact location of Carne as per the 1841 Cornish Census for William Walters (Watters) as shown in the district of Crowan folio 56 page 6 so that I can ask a photographer to take a photo.

Chris Even today, Crowan really is a tiny place. From memory, Carne is the name given to a row of cottages, which forms the main (and only) street. I will go and have a look tomorrow - it isnt far from here. I would offer to take a picture, but I don't have a camera! However,if you can't find anything on the net, then if you can wait a week or two, my daughter will be home and I will make her do it - she knows how to send piccies too, which is something I have problems with. Hmmmmm...I have been for a looksee and this is going to be more difficult than I first thought...... Carne is outside Crowan village, up a narrow country lane. It consists of about six farmhouses, all with cottages and outbuildings. The only problem with that, all the farms are called Carne something! However, I went into the churchyard and found the standard little man you always find in the grave yard - he was mending some old wooden crosses, bless him. He said there are very few Williams buried there, but if I want to go back, he will find them for me. I am more than happy to do this if it will help you. I think I need to look at the census again and try to fix a landmark somehow, and then perhaps work out which of these six or so farmhouses your Williams were at - all the attached cottages are of the right sort of age, so that doesnt help. Not helped that there are some new build houses in amongst this lot, presumably where other, old dwellings were! It is a pretty place, at this time of the year, but desperately bleak in the winter. The surrounding area is mostly mine spoil (old) and is covered with scrub, and I would have thought it was a hard living for a farmer. OC

The following is part of a reply from Michael McCormick By the way, the transcript is correct, it is WALTERS. But of course, this is just what the enumerator wrote and not necessarily what was on the household schedule. In 1836-40 the church tithes were bought out. So all land was surveyed and maps drawn up. The CRO have the maps and the apportionment rolls. This lists all land owners & their tenants. Perhaps this is where I should concentrate my research. When William and Lenora nee Holman were married in 1822 William was a miner. Thanks again Chris

Chris DOH! I don't know why I keep saying Williams - I did know it was Walters or Watters you are looking for! Yes, if you can get an OS reference, that would be helpful. Otherwise it is just going to be a guess as to which row of cottages in which farm it is! OC

OC I have sent an email to the Cornish Studies Library asking for information about the tithe records 1836-1840 showing land owners and tenants. I expect an answer in about a week and I will let you know what transpires. Thanks again Chris

Hello OC, Just awoken to good news from Kim Cooper of the Cornish Studies Library! 'I have located Carne on older OS maps to the east of Crowan village (grid reference 6534) and also on the tithe map for Crowan Parish which we hold here on microfiche. We have the accompanying tithe apportionment lists too and I located Carne on these. I could not initially find William, but then traced him at Carn Vean which is to the north of Carn'. William lived at Carn Vean. By chance a family member on holiday in Cornwall took some photos of the general area and lo and behold there was one of Carn Vean but 'No one was home' . It is quite a nice one, so if you would like to take any more that would be great. If you do go again and make contact with the owners my address is [email protected].
