From the 1881 + 1891 census I can see that a Margaret Smith, born c.1831 in Ireland was living at Castle Hill, Tolbooth, Edinburgh. Her occupation was a Refreshment Room Keeper (self-employed), or today's pub owner. The problem is that I don't even have a pub name to go on. Please, please, please can anyone advise me as to how I go about trying to find out where this pub was. Any help would be of help. Cheers, Elaine |

Are you sure it was a pub? She may have worked from home (in a front room etc.). I know of barbers, grocers etc. that worked from home. If there was a pub name, I think it would have been in the address. Kath. x |

The census is from her home address with her occupation on it - its not from the actual pub address. Elaine |

That's what I mean Elaine. Since she was self employed, she may have had a 'refreshment room' at home (like a cafe in a room in her home). Kath. x |

Kathleen Now I'm getting your drift - I will be back in Scotland in September so I'll check the address to see if it is at all possible. Thanks for for your input - didn't even think of that possiblity. Elaine |
