The James Fitzgerald/Emma Moss marriage cert should give you her father. All the facts seem to point to Emma Moss being a dau born before the marriage-and she may have been known as Emma Booth without actually being his Peter

Do you have the birth cert for Elizabeth Fitzgerald who was 8 on the 1881? It might give you some info .

One last try!! Hi, anyone up for a challenge that is driving me insane?? I have posted this before but still came up with a blank, so am hoping there might be fresh eyes with fresh ideas. On the 1861 census I have James Hymes (transcribed as Hynus) with his wife Ann (formerly Hannah Booth, married to William Booth in 1849). Children of Hannah and William are as follows: William Booth born 1851 Lancashire, Salford Ann Ellen Booth born 1853 Lancashire Salford John Booth born 1855 Lancashire Salford Now the mystery!! In the census, James is listed as head, time keeper, born Ireland, followed by Ann as his wife, next on the list is a daughter, Booth, aged 15, step daughter, maker up factory, born Salford, Lancashire. What is her first name???? There is just a gap where her first name should be. At first I thought it must just be meant to be Ann, following on from her mother, and the enumerator had forgotten to put the 'ditto', but looking further down, Ann Ellen is there, so the name is obviously not Ann. Also, parents of the children werent married until 1849, and according to this census, the first child was born in 1846. I know that sometimes the ages were wrong, but even presuming she was really born in 1849, surely it would be obvious that there was not 5 years difference between her and the next child, if in fact there was only 2? I have tried looking for a female Booth born between 1846/1849 in Salford, but there are too many. Also tried looking for a female Moss (mothers maiden name), but again there are too many of them. She has obviously moved out by 1871 as she is not on the census with the rest of the family. In 1881, James and Ann have a grandaughter Elizabeth Fitzgerald, aged 8, living with them. I then looked for possible parents of Elizabeth but the nearest I can come up with is a James Fitzgerald marrying an Emma Moss in Manchester, June 1/4 1868. I can actually see an Emma Moss birth in Manchester in September 1/4 1847, which I suppose is a possibility. If this is the one and she WAS born before Ann and William married, would she be given her mothers maiden name? I have the couple Hannah and William on the 1851 census in Hulme, but only William, aged 9 months is with them. I suppose the thing to would be to get the marriage certificate of James and Emma (presuming they married each other that is!) and take it from there, but I am just throwing this out to see if anybody can suggest anything else to find this nameless Booth from the 1861 census!! Thanks for reading this long ramble!! Best wishes Carol
