Well, it is diffiuclt 'cos you don't get too much information on the web other than the name, place of registration, and quarter in which they died. All you can do is send off for the certificate and see who reported the death ......... and hope against hope that it was reported by a member of the family, or the address is one you know about! Could be £7 well spent, or wasted! Have to go now, it's lunchtime here (Canada) ....... I'll leave you to the tender mercies of others. I will check back later today to see if anyone ahs been able to help you. Good Luck, Sylvia

It does seem strange that the grandparents would not have continued to care for Mary, but instead let her go into the pauper school. They had children not much older than her. Unless, of course, they thought they were the best for her, and she was one of those cases where relatives were not informed about the shipping to Canada.

SylviaInCanada Report 24 Jul 2007 19:53

That is also a possibility of course! Is there anyhting on the War Department site on the Boer War??

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 24 Jul 2007 19:52

Consider the following possibilities:- Children were put into those schools because their parents could not care for them, because they were orphaned, or because no relatives would take responsibility. Children were sent en masse to Canada, Australia, and New Zaland as Home Children, and many of them ended up being used basically as slaves on farms and in homes in those countries. The 'charities' that did this did not always inform the parents or other relatives that the children were to be sent overseas ............. and the children were often told, falsely, that mom/dad were dead and/or not coming back for them. There was very little consultation carried on. One of the darkest periods in the history of children's charities in the UK. ...... and one of the biggest offenders so far as shipping them to Canada was concerned was Dr Barnardo's!! On the other hand, many of the schools, particularly in the London area, did do a very good job of educating children who otehrwise would not have received an education. I wonder if Henry did die, or emigrate, leaving his child to the tender mercies of ............................??????

Have you considered the possibility that Henry (and possibly the rest of the fmaily) emigrated?? I've just been doing a quick look, and cannot find Sarah, William or the young Patrick on the 1901 Census. I haven't checked Deaths to see if they died between 1891 and 1901 Sylvia
