If you’ve got proven matches to your father parents, grandparents, great grandparents then so should he.
If there are no matches then the nieces theory could be wrong.

Still working this out .....

The DNA match is being managed by the man's niece.
She strongly suspects that his father is not who it was thought, so we are looking for possibie links with my tree.

If his results are managed by a woman then I beleve that the likely explanation is that she is a professional researcher whom he has engagaged to look for relatived e.g. if he is illegitimate and doesn't know who one of his grandparents is.

We have that problem with my OH and are still trying to get one of several known descendants to do a DNA test, so far unsuccessfully but the one test we have got on another branch has narrowed it down to one of three brothers.

Hopefully, if he HAS engaged a professional he is looking for answers the same as you.

I’m back. It was dna painter I was thinking of. You don’t seem to be able to use Ancestry on that but you can see Chromozone painter on Ancestry so you can see wher the various bits of chromozone come from and it can show you what region each bit comes from.
You find it via Ethnicity Estimates.

If you mean like on MH, then no.

Have you colour coded your matches and been able to find any matches that you actually know with the unknown one.

I’ve not looked at the latest tricks on Ancestry - not sure if they cost extra.

There is a seperate chromosome matching or something - but I am about to go out. When I get back I’ll look into it and let you know.

Do you have the facility on Ancestry to compare groups of matches? You can sometimes pinpoint a more precise relationship through them, and dismiss those who don't fit in. You would compare the 2 matches you have listed on here and see how they relate to each other, if indeed they do.

First, remember that a first cousin once removed can be a generation older or younger.

If it is the older generation then the shared ancestor would be a great grandparent. If a generation younger then it would be a grandparent.

As the tree is managed by someone it is a bit easier to make an approach. Just try saying you were surprised to see the match and are they interested.
They may not answer or cut off your access or may be as intrigued as you.

Research the man? But be prepared for an outcome which you don't like.

I have a DNA match on Ancestry and can't figure out how we match.
Can anyone suggest how I can work out the link, please?

What is known from the results.......

Both myself and the man in question link on my paternal side.
He is not on Ancestry, his results are managed by a woman.

He is shown as..
1st cousin 1x removed
Parent 2's side
350 cM | 5% shared DNA

This is a closer match than another known 1st cousin once removed (daughter of my female cousin, who is my father's brother's daughter)
This match shows as
1st cousin 1x removed
Parent 2's side
166cM 2% shared DNA

Although there is a tree shown, none of the names have any known link to my family, although some are from the same geographical area.

I suspect we may be on sensitive ground here, so how do I best find more about this link.?
