Do you know his date of birth? I can't see him in Llanwrst. Is there anyone else in the family whose name you know that I could search for?

If you have Mair's death certificate you can ask them to open the record.

It was Hugh's year of birth that I wanted as there are too many Hugh Jones in Wales and none in Llanwrst. Was Mair's mother called Charlotte?

Idont know mairs mothers name or Hughs birthday sorry

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 7 Sep 2017 18:05

In that case you either need Mair's birth certificate to get her parents names or her death certificate to get her 1939 record opened.

The only Mair born on 12th May 1923 who is on the 1939 Register is Mair Howells (nee Mair David) living at 12 Southall Street , Cowbridge R.D., Glamorganshire, Wales.

Suzanne

When you say you have got Mair's birth on Ancestry, do you mean you have found the record in the birth index or have you actually bought the birth certificate? If you have the birth certificate it will name her parents and then this will mean you can also look for her mother on the 1939 Register. You really can't get much further on this unless you buy some certificates.

no Kathleen ive found the birth on ancestry after being given her birth date and year and place of birth by her son who is a friend of mine,i knew mair when i was a teenager, but because she married twice and has a son my age 52,it was difficult to find her,i knew she was brn in Llanwrst, but married for the second time in anglesey,so i looked in the local archives(llangefni) and found the second marriage ,that gave me her fathers name.x

Suzanne .......

if she only died last year, then her record will still be closed on the 1939 Register unless someone has gone to the expense and trouble of buying her death certificate, contacting FMP with that proof, and then waiting for the record to be opened. It will not show even if someone finds her father's entry.

I'm not sure if you know ...............

the 1939 Register became the basis of the NHS in 1947, and as such was updated regularly until 1991 re deaths and women marrying. That's why the last married name of a woman is the one that is shown first on the Index, with her maiden name and any previous married names shown in brackets.

Updating stopped in 1991 until FMP acquired the rights. Since then, records have slowly but surely been opened as a) people send in the proof, and b) FMP staff slowly find proof of death and open a record.

Now, that last becomes difficult as FMP will not have a woman's married name after ca 1991

There are many anomalies .............. it is assumed that a person born before ca 1920 (I think) is assumed to be dead, but records are often closed because there is no proof or they haven't got round to realising that a person MUST be dead.

For example, I have an uncle born in 1895 married to someone born ca 1899 who had 5 daughters and a son born between ca 1924 and 1932. ALL of those records are still closed!

All 5 daughters and their families emigrated to Australia in the late 1950s to early 1960s, aunt and uncle followed them. Two of the daughters are still alive down under, all the others died there. The son stayed in the UK but died in the 1990s.

No-one has provided proof of death, even though some of the grandchildren in the UK have been doing the family history for years, and I'm not about to go to the expense of buying Australian death certificates.

I have found the entry on the street where they were living after the war .... with all 8 records still blocked. That's all I need to know.

Incidentally, you yourself can do a search on FMP for free to see if you can spot any names that look promising, and then ask on here for someone who does have a sub for details.

As I said before, your best chance of finding Mair on the 1939 register is to buy her death certificate so that you can get her record opened. There is no sign of Hugh in Llanwrst.

Do you know Mair's married name (either her first married name or the second)?

thank you Kathleen and sylvia.

Mairs first married name was Evans, the second Williams. i found her dads name when i found her second marriage details at the local archives,,I know her father Hugh Jones was a stonemason.
After looking today ,i think ive found her parents marriage in Llanwrst while searching using family search,im not a profetional geneologist ,im doing this for my childhood friend who was the youngest son of Mairs second marriage,

never even thought that you might be a professional!!!!

But the problem is still opening the 1939 Register to get at the information.

Hello Sylvia and thank you for your interesting information.

What i was trying to do was to find Mairs parents in Llanwrst and from that get an Address ,i will relay the information about opening the 1939 census to Mair"s son and leave it to him to decide.the Marriage found looks promising as Mair kept Hughes as part of her surname for some years

thank you for your information.

So who is named for Mother of Mair on that 1923 Birth Cert?...

(don't think I have seen her mentioned anywhere, just Hugh for Father)

(otherwise you need the Cert.)

Chris :)
