Can someone assist me please on this frustrating issue i have..

Ancestry UK has a Free Military this weekend..

I had signed up with them in 07....All my settings in place with United Kingdom.

I am in Australia.....i'm 1st Born here My Parents, Brothers were born in UK long long ago.

I have always been able to use the 'Free UK Ancestry' for many years...twice it has happened now where i'm blocked from accessing Records.... it reverts to the AU site...they rarely have UK Military Free mostly Aust...Records there.

I have no Aussie Ancestors or Relatives here only British!

A friend of mine, is same as me, BUT she can use the FREE Ancestry UK!!

She is not Blocked at all !!

I have on my (email add) .au my friend has .com would this be the reason

Anyone have an answer to this......I have sent an email on my problem to Ancestry UK

a few days ago, no response as yet!

Please Help!....Poppy!

Think it's only Ancestry that can answer .

You may be right that it's to do with your email address

When Ancestry reply, I think they'll just tell you to delete all your cookies - hardly a practical solution.

It is connected to your email or possibly your server's location.
I live in Canada, and when searching in the UK I prefer to use the UK site - it has more useful defaults.
If I'm searching in Canada or the US, I prefer to use those sites for the same reason.

So same I'm looking on the appropriate 1901/1900 census:

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=7814 [Eng]
http://search.ancestry.ca/search/db.aspx?dbid=8826 [Can]
http://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=7884 [USA]
http://search.ancestry.com.au/search/db.aspx?dbid=1738 [NSW]

(to illustrate the Ancestry sites)

I would suggest you always access rhe Rnglish census using the UK site.
Eventually (several hundred accesses later), Ancestry will put up a page which effectively says:

"We recommend you use the Ozzie site
Click here if you really want to go to the UK sit"

So click on the go to UK site option - there's a short time limit
(If you cross the room to find your right glasses, by the time you get back they've made the wrong decision for you.)
As you continue to use the UK site, they'll put the page up evey now and again - maybe once a week (I don't really know).

Here's the English census links (gotten via the "Search" of Ancestry's card catalog):

England
1841 http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=8978
1851 http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=8860
1861 http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=8767
1871 http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=7619
1881 http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=7572
1891 http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=6598
1901 http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=7814
1911 http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=2352
1911S http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=1708

======================================

I would recommend you supplement Ancestry's free search with:

https://familysearch.org/search/collection/list#page=1®ion=UNITED_KINGDOM_IRELAND

FS's 1911 is not very useful. I prefer FMP's:

1911 http://search.findmypast.co.uk/search-world-Records/1911-census-for-england-and-wales

You can compare my free search with a subscriber's transcription at:
http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/ancestors/thread/1367011?page=1

You can see what the free Ancestry gives by just entering the Piece number & Household schedule number in the Ancestry 1911 whose URL I posted above (won't work for Leeds or anywhere north of Smethwick)

Incidentally, the other census on FMP are gotten via:

1841 http://search.findmypast.co.uk/search-world-Records/1841-england-wales-and-scotland-census

with edits of this URL from 1841 to 1851 thru 1901 as appropriate

I also access ancestry from Canada, and have a Canadian email address ....... very occasionally the .co.uk site will tell me that I want the .ca site but there has been the option to say "no I don't"!!

On a couple of occasions it has then taken me automatically to .ca .............. I've then had to close the site down, and then re-open, and it has then obeyed me

BTW, I never sign out of ancestry

Its interesting what you have said......I signed with Ancestry UK 10yrs ago

sometime later there was an Ancestry AU!

Until then never had a problem,,,,never use the AU site....have no need to!

The biggest mistake i made earlier this year i had problems with installing windows 10
i had to take the computer into to be looked at.....

so at the time i signed out of some sites AND also Ancestry UK by mistake....
later i realised what i did & though Oh No ! as i had not previously signed out.

I have my settings at UK but still reverts back to AU does not ask me like it had done some years back.

I will try with another email add....ending in .com.

In the past never had that problem, with Canada or US site....only UK! in last 2yrs.

SylviaInCanada!

Thanks for replying1

I hope to overcome this annoyance! i just sent off another email to ancestry uk

as i had not heard from the previous one that i sent some days ago!

I had seen that box you describe about 'Do you want to go to the AU' with that option of ..No I Don't ! i have not come across that for quite some time.

I do wonder though if i decide at anytime to buy a Subscription via UK would they
do the same ...Block Me! or would it be safer to go via AU !

I think i have just about thought of everything to overcome this problem...may have
to change to my other email add ending in .com!

I must say though do not have a problem with FMP (uk) had previously subscriptons.

well, I've had a sub with Ancestry since 2004, and have always managed to get into .co.uk even if I have had to exit and re-enter ............

I've had the same email address since I first subscribed, and it ends in .ca

I pay my sub using a Canadian credit card (correction ..... OH now buys it for me as a present, but I use the same credit card)

I pay the sub in £ sterling, ancestry charges the credit card in $, and the credit card makes the conversion

I don't see why you should have to go to an email with .com

GR has been the problem for me ......

........ they insisted that I HAD to pay my sub in $, except they didn't have the facility to work out the sub in Canadian $ so wanted to charge me in US $. That meant that my credit card did the conversion, charged the usual fee for doing it ...... and when I did the calculation back to £ sterling, I'd paid twice the actual cost of the sub. :-0

GR said the only thing I could do was put my residence as in the UK, and then they would charge me in £ ....... so that is what I did

daft beggars!!
