Many years ago I had a Practical Family History magazine that had a scenario that you read and then had to try to find all the errors in it. This would be good for my family history group, but I have not seen anymore. Does anyone know if there is any out there? Thanks Pam

I suggest you contact your local library.
I don't imagine they will have back issues, but they could tell you how to find out who does.

Could you not use your own examples?

If I follow the hints on Ancestry, or look at public trees that have a person from my tree listed I see loads of mistakes.

Very often I can see why they've made the mistake:

They haven't opened the original document and just taken transcriptions as fact.

They assume that John Smith born in the approximate location at the approximate time is theirs because he married their Nan in that area. They often choose the most likely, instead of fully investigating.

They have copied other people's incorrect research, and failed to spot errors themselves.

Some believe all children in their family were born in wedlock and refuse to acknowledge illegitimate births etc. and will find any marriage that fits however unlikely it seems to others.

If their Gran told them it was true...it must be!

I'm sure many of us could provide examples of errors from the glaringly obvious to complex situations.

I'm not sure all of these are relevant, but this familysearch info might be a useful starting point:

Thanks I will probably do something similar. What I was looking for was a story with errors I think I may have confused everyone with how I described it. but not to worry Thanks for helping Pam

I do know the sort of thing you mean- I did have a google round but couldn't find anything along those lines.

Thanks for trying. Its a bit like where you get 2 pictures and have to spot deliberate mistakes. Only the one I need is in word form as a story. I will have to find my old magazine copy which is tucked away 'somewhere safe' Thanks Pam
