I have recently come across the Essex Archives Online website. This website allows you to few, as far as I can tell, all the parish registers for Essex. All be it on a subscription basis.

I was just wondering why this service is not available for most if not all the counties.

££££ ???

Quite a few voluntary groups are attempting to transcribe various parish records, but they don't have permission to upload the images. Being charities, they don't have the funds to buy access.

One site that many of us are aware of is http://cityark.medway.gov.uk/
Although located in Kent, its a unitary authority and outside the remit of Kent County Council as far as Archives (and many other things) are concerned. PR on City Ark are free to view.

I am just so impressed that Essex have them all available to view in 1 place. It gets so frustrating hunting around various places trying to find registers.

I agree that Essex Archives have done a wonderful job with putting all the registers online, plus the extras like wills.

I have had a subscription since they started and it has been invaluable in researching my Essex line. Before it all came online I had spent a couple of 'holidays', cranking the parish register films, whilst staying in B&Bs local to the RO. The cost of each 'holiday' far outstripping the cost of an annual subscription!

Now I sit at home with a cup of tea at my side and can browse at my hearts content.
