It might be interesting to see what the will contains, as this is only the Index to the granting of Probate, no details shown of how he left his estate

England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations), 1858-1966

Name: Henry Luscombe
Probate Date: 10 Nov 1914
Registry: Exeter
Death Date: 12 Feb 1914
Death Place: Devon, England

from image:-

of Higher Hendham, Woodleigh, Devonshire, Farmer, died 12 February 1914. Probate [granted] Exeter 10 November 1914 to Edward Bond Luscombe, John White Underhay and James Frederick Baker, Farmers. Effects £2,356 1s 4d

SylviaInCanada Report 29 Feb 2016 00:47

but Roger Luscombe left the UK in 1873, and that court case was 1897 ????????????

SylviaInCanada

so somebody ordered some clothes and somebody seems to not have paid, or something :-)

Found this - Roger Luscombe junior in court, 1897 (scroll down to "Civil Cases"):

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 28 Feb 2016 22:52

Roger's father Henry was still alive in 1911, and didn't die until 1914, so his death can't have affected whether they married or not.

Deaths Mar 1914 (>99%)
Luscombe Henry 90 Kingsbridge 5b 305

Perhaps it was some age restriction on potential inheritance? Roger would have been 50 when they married - a good round number, and maybe his father hoped it would sound so old and daunting to the young Roger that he would break off with Susan.

SylviaInCanada Report 28 Feb 2016 19:36

:-D

According to the Cyclopedia of New Zealand v3 Canterbury document, which can be seen on FindMyPast, Roger said he was married in Devonshire in 1873

so it really does look as though they did not marry until 1904 ........ the question is why???

They were both pretty young to have been married to someone else before 1873, although that is not impossible.

Could Roger have been under some sort of restriction by his father not to marry Sarah?

Do you know when his father died?

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 28 Feb 2016 19:25

Is Sarah on the passenger list as Perring or Luscombe?

What is the baby's surname?

OOPs sorry ..... you've already answered this question

sheryl Report 28 Feb 2016 18:20

ship sailed 2 November 1873. The child's named looks like Georgina or Georgena? Susan Jane died 15/1/1934.

sheryl

sheryl Report 28 Feb 2016 18:09

Roger Bond Luscombe purchased Combe Royal at auction in 1912 I believe.

sheryl

sheryl Report 28 Feb 2016 18:06

Yes it would be Susan Jane as she was 20 years old when they sailed for NZ in 1873.
Roger Bonds parents were Henry and Mary and were farmers at Higher Hendham Woodleigh. One of Roger Bonds sons returned to Devon roughly when Roger Bond and Susan did and helped his grandfather to farm the property.

ArgyllGran Report 28 Feb 2016 18:06

On the face of it, this could be Georgina's birth - but after you say the family went to NZ? Must be another Georgina.

Thank you all for this information! Some of this I know already - I know about Roger Bond's birth, his family, the names of his children and that they returned to the UK and bought Combe Royal in Devon. This new information about Susan Jane and her family is very interesting - the story that I heard (which came from outside of the family) was that Susan was 'below his station in life' which was why they emigrated to NZ although 2 of his brothers had already emigrated. On the passenger list Susan was listed as "Lusconbe" and they had a 6 month old baby called Georgina (who I haven't been able to track in NZ - not sure what happened to her?)

Any more information about this would be greatly appreciated - I am new to this family history research but keen to learn!

Living as Luscombe before marriage - although Sarah, not Susan - presumably mistranscription on the ER, as she's Susan on later ER's:

Sarah Jane Luscombe
in the New Zealand, Electoral Rolls, 1853-1981
Name: Sarah Jane Luscombe
Electoral Year: 1896
District: Ashburton
Region or Province: Canterbury

Address: Eiffelton

Living with Roger Bond Luscombe, Eiffelton, farmer

This is the latest NZ ER showing for them on Ancestry - so they travelled back between 1911 and 1925:

Susan Jane Luscombe
in the New Zealand, Electoral Rolls, 1853-1981
Name: Susan Jane Luscombe
Electoral Year: 1911
District: Hurunui
Region or Province: Canterbury

Living with Roger Bond Luscombe, farmer.

There's also an Albert Edward Luscombe, shepherd, at a different address.
(Their son, as shown by WW1 record - below.)
