Maybe many of our roots lie in the Sack, Kay! :-D :-D :-D

Thanks to all who replied. I've now seen the original and Kense was correct that 'Land' was David - a Violinist. Also, Kay was correct that 'Sack' was Sarah. I don't know who transcribed this but all these entries looked perfectly clear.

Hugh.

Kense

Without seeing the original it seems that Land is a poor transcription of David
and Urchnest of Violinest..

The original 1871 image on SP has only 4 children of Martha a Gardners Widow and 1 grandchild Sarah age 4.

SP search of all census does not show any person named Land Crawford.neither does it show in Baptisms.

could it be Laird, not Land

Gee

Gee Report 25 Jan 2016 18:34

I think 'Land' must have been a mistranscription!

You will need Scotlands People website to view the original of the census - there are only transcriptions on FMP, Ancestry etc You may be able to see what the original says and maybe what a poor transcription it is ??

SP is a Pay to view site - £7 will buy you 30 credits - 5 credits to look at the origianl

The 1871 Census entry for the curiously-named Land Crawford of Islay shows his occupation as a Urchnest. The Oxford English Dictionary has nothing for this. Anyone got a clue what this means?
