You won 't be able to find out that information online. The online death index only goes up to about 2007.

If you know where the person lived you could contact the local register office but I'm not sure how much information they will tell you. You could also try contacting the local cemetery for where the person lived and see if they have a record of a burial or cremation for the person.

If his Estate went to Probate, you may find an entry here
https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills

However, as its a relatively new site, we aren't too sure how frequently its updated.
If the person had a common name, its a bit hit or miss if any entry is for the correct 'John Smith'.

Have you tried on line memorial sites eg http://www.iannounce.co.uk

Lesley - not for a death in this current year!

The gro indicies aren't available on line after 2006. Relatively recent additions can be viewed in hard copy/fiche at various places around the country, but even then there is a considerable delay before ones in the last few months are available.

In addition to the links put up earlier, Ancestry seem to have got hold of various death announcements, possibly from other online sites or local papers. They have transcribed the vital elements such as

Mr D Jones
Died 27 Nov 2011
Age 79
Area Bournemouth

Unless the person being looked for has an uncommon name AND you know where he should have been living, its difficult to be sure that the entry is relevant

You could ask the relatives................or is there a reason why you can't?

Look at the announcement sites................

This presumes that the question refers to the UK......................

I am presently going through the process of being an Executor. It is the third time that I have carried out this role.

One thing I refused to do was place a notice of this person's death in their local paper. Which means nothing will ever show up on these 'announcement' sites.

Or will it????

When the Estate accounts are finalised and before anything is distributed to the named beneficiaries a notice will be placed in the Gazette (was the London Gazette). This is as much to protect me as anything else. Because if a distribution is made and subsequently another person turns up having a valid claim, who would that person 'go after'?

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/wills-and-probate

Click any of the 'View full notice' to read the legal statement. If the Will and Estate are straightforward (as most are) these notices are submitted shortly after death - perhaps 2-4 months. But a complex situation may take years. (re: Dickens' Bleak House)

That's a good idea Inky - a source we may not have considered

Re: DET's first post.
I can confirm that the probatesearch site is updated regularly.

The Grant that I am presently using is listed. It was issued in May. And the results for that surname search also included some June dates.

I also checked for my own (fairly common) surname. There are five records within 141 hits for this year that show an issue date of 23June.

Thank you Inky. - that's good to know :-)
