Hi

I am interested to know what peoples thoughts and opinions are on the below.

What do sites like this and Ancestry, FMP etc. versus Hull History Centre online and others have in common?

What are there differences?

What are there shortcomings?

What can't they find out that you would like to?

What are there shortcomings of Parish Records?

How could such issues be resolved?

Many thanks

May be mistakenly, it appears that Hull History Centre online is primarily a catalogue of resources. To view them, it would seem that you'd have to visit or (probably) pay an archivist.

The advantage of the other sites you mention is that as long as you subscribe you can see in the comfort of your own home the image if it is available, or a transcription if it is not.

'Remote' FH researchers tend to be referred by search engines to the Hull HC for PR etc.

The marriages after 1837 in Parish Records are the same as the MC issued on payment by the GRO. The advantage of the original image is that one can see the actual handwriting. Prior to then, the couple's father' were rarely mentioned.

Baptism may give the date of birth, but rarely the mother's maiden name.
Burials tend only to give the name, age and 'from' details of the deaceased. Occassionally they'll say 'child of' and name a parent. A DC will give more information such as the informant, cause of death, where and when they died.

You can't 'resolve' the issues between the two - they are different types of records which add to the ancestors time-line.

If you are involved with HHC, you may wish to suggest they follow the example of Essex Archives aka SEAX. They have uploaded many of the PR images and charge for 'Passes' so that one can view them.

Apparently the 24 hour pass is shortly to increase to £10. However, if one is fortunate enough to find even 2 marriage entries, you'd have saved money. The Gro charges £9.25 per certificate

errrrrrrrrrrrr ...........

you asked these questions on both FTF and Rootschat, and finally admitted after much questioning that your "company" has asked you to do a survey to find out about the feasibility of starting a genealogy company

You received many replies on those other sites, and I think were told that they would have to find a niche that would be profitable for them

yeah, that was becoming apparent, eh?

Good idea when surveying people about starting up a business to spell things correctly, I'd say.

What are there differences?
What are there shortcomings?
... THEIR

What are there shortcomings of Parish Records?
... um, the?

The questions indicate a rather weak grasp of the whole idea, I'd say.

I do note that you have now edited the OP on this thread in order to remove the initials RS .......... however, several other people had already seen and noted the presence of them.

others might like to compare this OP with the one from FTF by Ribbonstream and the one from Rootschat by Divergent

I think they are identical!

The thing is ................ we don't mind helping people trying to collect information to help with academic projects, but it is a very different matter when someone is collecting information with an intent to make financial benefit out of it!

I've mention on Candidiasia's other thread that the Ribbonstreams question is also on the WDYTYA forum.

His is not an academic question.

He admits to doing it for the company he ( ? and Candidiasia) work for.
