I think this is Robert's marriage, as you said he was a toy maker?

It gives John as father occupation, wine merchant....which seems a bit unlikely. I would guess that was made up info because John was no longer 'part of the family' . Annie Irwin was a witness,

It's possible if he was in the workhouse for health reasons that he wouldn't have been fit to travel. You could buy the death cert and see if what caused his death was something 'long term' that might have prevented him being at the wedding?

poppygirl Report 30 Oct 2014 21:19

that is what I have. John is down as a widower, but his wife, caroline is down on a seperate census as married. very Strange.

Why would he not attend his daughter's marriage. If he were in the workhouse wouldn't he have been able to attend the wedding. Unless he just didn't have the money to get to Croydon, Mitcham area.

Caroline Irwin b 1880-1884 was married in Mitcham in 1905 to Frederick William Tutty
They were my grandparents. Unofrtunately I do not have any other details of the family. My grandfather died when I was only young and my mother had already died, by then, anyway, so not anyone to ask. It was just that there was no other Caroline Irwin in the area around that time. Caroline was marrried in Mitcham which is not far from where the Tutty family came from, not sure what she was doing there, though.

I have details of the Tutty family and thought I had plenty of the Irwin family but am worried now that I have it wrong. I really appreciated both of you helping me. Thank you

John was in the workhouse, on the 1901 census. Perhaps he did leave the family and that IS why Charles gave Caroline away. But I believe that one of Caroline's siblings was married after that and gave, John, as their father, it is getting compllicated. Anne John's other daughter, moved to Hampshire, I believe and had a son and then married in 1921, Hampshire

This could be the brother Charles in 1901? it does look like the family was scattered in the 1901 census.

I saw that Caroline and Ethel were together, on 1901 census. I am sure it is them because I have noticed before that it says that Ethel was born in Dixie Stree,t which is where the Ethel I have was born. What is your opinion, please. Do you think it IS the same Caroline Irwin that was the daughter of John and Caroline.

I wonder?

Caroline and Ethel seemed to have gone to Stedham st James. Sussex in that 1901, even though Caroline is down as married, I wonder if she was a widow or John had left them? This could be Annie,

Gee Report 30 Oct 2014 19:12

Ages are only rounded off on the 1841 census, that said, many didn't know when they were they born so the census info is frequently wrong in respect of age
