Possible Census error in 1901? (Higham's)

Hello All

Just looking at the HIGHAM family from Wigan, and have them in 1911 at Ellis Street:
Name Age
Joseph Higham 45
Elizabeth Higham 44
John Higham 24
James Higham 22
Dorathy Higham 20
Nellie Higham 18
Tom Higham 15
Lily Higham 8
Fred Higham 6
Florrie Higham 2
Ethel Higham 6/12

I believe I have them in 1901 without the Father, but is there a possible census reporting error? You see it says the Mother is Elizabeth MITCHELL, first Son is John MITCHELL, but then over the page, the rest of the children are back to HIGHAMS. They are at #57 Whelley, Wigan.

If you look above at #59, there is another Family, Ann, Elizabeth & Ella Mitchell, so do you think the enumerator just "ditto'd" my Elizabeth and John as Mitchell in error as they were the last 2 on the page, when he should have wrote HIGHAM?( all the ages match everyone else). If so, can anyone find Joseph Higham born 1866 in 1901 seeing as Elizabeth lists herself as head of the house?

Name Age
Elizabeth Mitchell 34
John Mitchell 14
James Higham 11
Dorothy Higham 10
Nellie Higham 8
Thomas Higham 5
Joseph Higham 3
Elizabeth Higham

hope you can help
thank you

thank you - I will look into this to see if I can find a Maria in the family - I think I have Joseph's parents as John & Dorothy. In 1891, Jospeh and Wife Elizabeth are lodging with Father John (Wid) at the Balcarress Arms pub at 172 Scholes STreet.

Thank you argylgran for clarifying that it isn't the right one in Westhoughton. And thanks for the new suggestion. I shall investigate. So do you think that in my original posting, the enumerator has indeed mis-recorded Elizabeth as a Mitchell when over the page her children are Higham?

Many thanks
Leyther

ArgyllGran Report 3 Aug 2014 23:02

Yes, I do.
It's too much of a coincidence that she and son John are listed as Mitchell, but not the rest of the children on the next page. It's not even her maiden name, which was Simm(s).

They were all Higham in 1891, and they're back to Higham in 1911, so yes, it's human error!.

thank you so much for confirming - initially at an initial glance I thought I may have had some mystery second marriage to start looking for. Thankfully I haven't :)
thank you for taking the time to help me

Warm regards
