Good morning,,can some kind soul confirm, or otherwise, that if a marriage that allegedly took place c1920 does not appear in BMD's...i.e.GRO Civil registrations...there was no such marriage??

At the moment nobody can find the following:

Joe George Freer Thompson to Naomi Brailsford c1920 Rotherham Yorkshire.

Tell me it never happened!!

Many thanks..Derek.

Perhaps it never happened because she was already married to someone else? :-

So if she was born 1899 then that would surely rule out the 1911 marriage?

Ricochet

Ricochet Report 29 Jul 2014 11:05

caseldine married Chappell in 1911, so Naomi's hubby must have been cuthbert

Wonder if this is a remarriage?

England & Wales, Marriage Index, 1916-2005
Name: Joe G Thompson
Spouse : Clarice Carrington
Date of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar 1929
Registration district: Rotherham
Inferred County: Yorkshire West Riding
Volume Number: 9c
Page Number: 1022

If so, wonder what the marital status was?

Derek, what's the background to this?

This hot weather is no good for the grey cells

although, having said that, in those days the legal age for marriage for girls was actually 12

Ricochet

Ricochet Report 29 Jul 2014 11:10

I added that marriage among all the info for the man

MarieCeleste

Yes, I've just noticed that Ricochet, but it wasn't clear to read.

There was a Naomi born1862 living in Rotherham on 1901 census, so perhaps that marriage was hers

yes, it was

Thank you all..particularly Ricochet and Marie Celeste..I thought I'd let you two battle on for a bit!!
I rejected the Thomas Cuthbert marriage, purely on age.Naomi was definitely born 1899 along with her twin Constance Annie...and they were defilinitely Brailsfords.
As for Joe George Freer Thompson..I know a lot about him.....was a right villain from all accounts.
He married in 1929 after the death of Naomi in 1927............which brings us no nearer to a definite answer............their three children were baptised Thompson..as was another with a different MMN....so looks like Joe was.as they say..at it with someone else....
and yes safc...Margaret was my wife..
Ricochet..there were actually four children ..one of them my first wife!! ...and don't ask!! yes she was a lot older than me.........anyone who says Toyboy is dead!!!

Hi Derek ............

unfortunately, there can be gaps in the GRO Index ...................

this can be due to at least 2 factors .................

1. Not all the records may have been transcribed .................. and that is shown in the heading on freebmd, eg

Marriages Mar 1929 (>99%)
Thompson Joe G Carrington Rotherham 9c 1028

>99% indicates that about 99% of the records have been transcribed

A side effect of the GRO transcription to freebmd is that the volume or page number for one of the pair in a marriage may have been mis-transcribed.

The volume number is what indicates the registration district, so a wrong volume number could put one spouse into the wrong area.

You can sometimes solve this by looking for each of the partners separately

2. We sometimes find that records did NOT reach GRO, and thus will be missing from the Index.

My understanding is that Vicars were supposed to forward information from their Parish Registers to the Local Registration Office at regular intervals.

The Local Registration Office then collated all the information, added them to their records, then forwarded copies of their Registers down to GRO every 3 months.

Sometimes, for whatever reason, the information did not get from the church(es) to the local office, or from the Local Registry Office to GRO.

So, answering the question you posed in your OP ...........

the absence of a record at GRO is not 100% evidence that the marriage did not take place.

How do you solve this problem?????

It means trying to find a marriage from a Local Registration Office, OR trying to find the church where they might have married

In addition, maybe you should also consider that the GRO index is only for England and Wales .....................

could the couple have married in Scotland, Ireland, or any other country?

Well then Sylvia....thank you for your lengthy, and as usual erudite and accurate summation of all the possibilities........and as usual it is lovely to hear from you, and knowing that your faculties are unimpaired by the passage of time..............what you're actually saying is that I cannot assume that there was no marriage..........which means i cannot put this saga to bed..........thanks a bunch!! ;-) :-P <3

I did come across one in the last year or so, where someone had her parents marriage cert in her possession but it wasn't on the index anywhere online
