As you can see they have nos at the end ..that is the ref from the Census...I dont have access to check it all out but as you can see both John Ness and Christina Ness have same details

Sadly, Just found his death certificate, married 1869 he died in 1871 aged 25.
Some of the old certificates are very hard to read and cost 5 credits on Scotland's people.
Could do with the transcription rather than the real thing but have not worked out how to do that!
Odd thing is on the death certificate it looks as if it says married to Christina Ness MS Hood and I thought she was MS Davidson and again on the marriage certificate though she is down as Christina Davidson her mother looks as if she is MS Hood
Head spinning.
May see if you can access the records for real in Edinburgh.

Just when I thought I had it all nicely worked out all these confusing children appear!!!! :-S
This Christina Davidson, my great great grandmother was quite a girl.
So far she was born C 1838 in Fife.
Married John Ness in 1860.
Then all the children called Ness.
He died in 1868 and she married James Brodie in 1869.
In the 1871 census there are five children all called Ness but Jane was born after john ness's death and I can find her birth registered with the new husband James Brodie as the father.
By 1881 Christina is a widow - don't know when James Brodie died - and her daughter Jane has Brodie Ness as her name and another daughter Devina Barclay Ness has appeared even though she was born after both husbands died!
Someone has found a record for her which shows that she was the illegitimate daughter of Christina Brodie, a widow formerly Davidson and a seaman David Barclay. Both parents were present at the registration of the birth.
So, totally confused as you can imagine!
Guess my great granny was illegitimate and my great granny a player! Incidentally she lived until 1929 dying aged 90 and I have some amazing photographs of her.

you dont join Scotlands People its not a subs site

You purchase units on there and use the units to look at transcriptions and certs before c1911 .after that you cant view online but can purchase a cert through them at £10 each

It costs 1 unit to view the transcription and 5 units to see the actual record

think you buy in units of 30 for about £6.95 .not sure of the actual as its some time since I bought BUT its very reasonable

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ for Scottish records including BMD. Although it is a pay to view site you can often get clues from free searches. You could look up her marriage - Scottish M certificates give a great deal more information, such as the mother's maiden name, than English/Welsh ones

I am looking for help with the family of Davina Barclay Brodie, b Burntisland, Fife, in 1876
Scottish records are not very plentiful on this site.
I have found her in the 1891 census living in Kirkcaldy with her sister Jane and widowed mother Christina.
As she has Barclay in her name I am hoping that her mothers maiden name was possibly Barclay or this was the name of her fathers mother?
In the 1901 census she is married to William Hume Marshall and living in Dysart, Fife
with their children James - my grandfather - and Christina.
Know the 1901 is correct.
Can't find any other records for any of them on genes reunited and freebmd seems to only have records for England and Wales.
Any advice on looking for Scottish relatives would be much appreciated.
