Once you have the District, Volume and page where do you go next?

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 30 Sep 2013 20:15

Do you want to order certs ?

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

Cost £9.25 per cert

You need to register first

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 30 Sep 2013 21:33

When you order a certificate online from the address GlitterBaby has given you above, make sure that when the online form asks "Is the full GRO reference known?" that you tick the "yes" box.

The reference is made up of the name, year, quarter, district, volume number and page number. Also make sure that you tick which sort of certificate it is you are ordering (either birth, marriage or death).

Thank you both for your quick replies.

I think I will have to order a birth cert. to find the parents.

Do any of the war records show parents? I have a lot of knowledge re his service records.

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 30 Sep 2013 21:50

Some service records show next of kin - which could be one of the parents.

When was this person born? Were they around at the time of one of the census years? If so you might be able to find them with parents. If it's a more recent birth you may have to buy the birth certificate.

Hi I have moved to the other side of my tree. Grandfather, I have very little information on him. I do have the original birth cert. However this does not show the parents! He was born in 1896. That makes me wonder, if I pay for birth certs. for the first person I was asking about, he was born in 1843 will that also not show parents.

If it only shows me his name and DOB I already have that.
thanks for any help

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 30 Sep 2013 22:22

You must have the "short" version of your grandfather's birth certificate. You can buy the full version and this will have his parent's names on it. If a child is illegitimate it usually only has the mother's name on it.

The certificates ordered online from the address given above will be the "full" certificate.

All birth certs include the names of the parents..............or, if the child was illegitimate - the mother only, unless the father attended at the time of registration

The GRO came into being in July 1837, but it was not until 1875 that penalties were introduced for not registering births, which meant that many of them went unrecorded

The GRO index does not show a date of birth - it tells you ONLY the qtr of the year in which the birth was registered.

After 1911, the GRO index includes the maiden name of the mother............

If these two people were born in 1843 and 1896 they should be on census returns.

If you would like to give the names and the area of the country where they lived we can see if we can find them with their families.

Your grandfather should feature in both the 1901 and 1911 census.
As you know his name and date of birth and area of registration, it might well be possible to find him with his parents.

Do you have access to census records or would you like to share his name and details and people could help find him.?

Reggie - short birth certificates do not show the name of the parents.

Mine does not (but my long one which I ordered a few years ago does)

Neither does my grans, again I ordered her full one a few years ago

Neither of us were illegitimate, it is just that at the time our parents could not afford to buy a full cert. Short ones were either free or half the price.

I am sitting here looking at my short certificate now.....

ErikaH

ErikaH Report 1 Oct 2013 16:27

I was referring to full certs, of course.

Should have made it crystal clear....................should have realised someone would pick me up on it

Yep....

Had to dig my certs out to make sure before I posted!!!
