Many thans, Yes Kath it looks promising.
The spelling catches you em instead of in.
He fits in with what i know.
When i look back at the 1851 census there is nothing.
His Father was also called Stephen, who was a brick layer.
I found a a Stephen in 1851, bricklayers labour. He couls be connected but he is vistimg a lady, nop mention of his family.
Kind regards Wally :-)

Have you tried using different surnames spellings and he may only have his first name shortened if he was lodging somewhere.

I am having a problem researching my GGGF.
He isn't on the 1861 census. His wife to be is.
My GGF is Stephen Joseph Collins he married Phoebe Bentley on 19th of May 1861.
They were married at St Marys Wednesbury Birmingham.
Stephen was supposed to be a( Master) Painter living in Leamington, Warwickshire
Can some explain to me why he doesn't register on the census, but clearly gets narried 2 monthd later?
Given what he was supposed to be, suely he would show on it?
Any ideas wouls greatly be appreciated.
Wally.
