I have deleted the 1871 census record I posted as it was the wrong family and don't want to confuse.

If the census already given is the correct family then the previous two generations are both called James and not John.

What evidence do you have that the father of James is John ?

EDIT - THIS SEEMS TO BE THE WRONG FAMILY.

I have deleted the census record I posted as it was the wrong family and don't want to confuse anyone.

This is probably your grandad's parent's marriage:-

Name: ASHMAN, James H
Registration district: St. Olave Southwark
County: London
Year of registration: 1925
Quarter of registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Spouse's last name: Stratford
Volume no: 1D
Page no: 255

Name: STRATFORD, Sarah L
Registration district: St. Olave Southwark
County: London
Year of registration: 1925
Quarter of registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
Spouse's last name: Ashman
Volume no: 1D
Page no: 255

If you buy the certificate it should hopefully name both their father's names. You can then look for the families in the 1911 census.
